No scientific experiment has ever demonstrated that a molecular structure can produce purposeful activity, let alone that which is conscious and autonomous! The blind Goddess is a hopelessly inadequate substitute for the Source of truth, goodness, freedom, justice, beauty and love…

What do you mean by purposeful activity?
, let alone that which is conscious and autonomous!
A large metal spike through the molecular structure known as the brain has shown to be quite effective in negating a person’s consciousness and autonomy.

I’m assuming by the Source of those concepts you mean Allah for whom Mohammed was his greatest prophet (PBUH).

Well, personally I don’t see this as the best argument for God. Science still has much more to discover. I prefer philosophical and historical arguments for the existence of God.

How is lack of belief absurd? What historical arguments are there for the existence of God?

I’m not sure what would convince me Christianity is true if I were an atheist.

I can think of three people I’ve met in my life so obviously holy I can’t imagine an atheist spending extended periods of time with them without being attracted to what they seem to have.

Perhaps if I was humble and open-minded I would begin to draw a connection between my lack of fulfillment and my lack of religion. It would take me time, though, and a great deal of open-mindedness to accept any organized religion, since I would have explained away long ago the beliefs and customs of any organized religion as mere mechanisms for making and keeping converts.

It would depend of course on God’s grace–furthermore, I would have to become aware of God’s grace in my life. For sure it wouldn’t be something I’d do on my own; I would have to have at least one or two holy friends to help me.

It is linked to the word “propose”, i.e. activity directed towards a future result.

It certainly negates the brain’s activity but it remains to be proved that mind = brain.

This forum is primarily philosophical rather than theological. Theism attributes the Creation of the universe to a Supreme Mind which is the Source of truth, goodness, freedom, justice, beauty and love…

“holy” is the key word in your reply because it takes us into a higher dimension than material reality.

👍 With the subsequent two thousand years of Christendom extending to the furthest parts of the world with the Fatherhood of God as the basis of human rights with the principles of liberty, equality and, above all, fraternity.

I understand the definition of purposeful, I just want to make sure this isn’t some specific terminology so that down the road you don’t claim that I’m not defining it correctly.

All that being said, there are thousands of various molecular structures from aardvarks to zydeco accordianists who purposely choose to engage in motion and do so.
It certainly negates the brain’s activity but it remains to be proved that mind = brain.
Assuming by mind you mean the enganging of deliberate thought processes, then I’d be curious if it has every been shown that a mind exists outside of a brain, meaning that the mind is it’s own separate thing and merely not a term for the acts of a functioning.

There have been expereiments where the brains of subjects have performed certain acts or thought of certain things and they have gauged which portions of the brain have been stimulated the most.

Could there be a mind apart from the brain? Anything is possible but there is exactly zero evidence to suggest so. You are merely adding an extra step on how thoughts work despite there not being a reason to do so.

It is an attribution that is neither provable nor falsifiable. It is a bit of whimsy with no evidence to ground it.

Lack of beliefs amounts to nihilism which in practice is impossible for any rational being.
  1. The history of the universe
  2. The life, death and resurrection of Christ
  3. The development of the Church into an international organization based on the teaching of Christ

You would have a very hard time trying to base moral and spiritual facts and values on scientific laws and theories!

How so? Couldn’t lack of belief simply mean that one makes up or chooses their own purpose and decide what meaningful or not? Seems almost like a false dichotomy.

If you make up your own purposes you are deceiving yourself! Pretending there is meaning when there isn’t any - like a child fantasizing!
Perhaps. A rather happy child at that. But does meaning have to come from an external source? How would we know that too be any more real?

A fool’s paradise is short-lived! Ignorance may be bliss for a while but reality has a habit of proving itself harsh for those who ignore it. We very soon find out if we try to invent meaning where it doesn’t exist. If we think like the egoist, for example, that everything exists just for our benefit and no one else’s we are due to have a shock. The first lesson is that we don’t invent meaning but have it thrust upon us whether we like it or not. We’re not intended to live for ourselves but to share life with others…

Actually, scientists have shown that given an external energy source (sun), molecules in fluid (oceans) have the ability and will likely organize to release heat efficiently.

Daddygirl,
Thank you for expressing in these post things that I often feel and think but can’t quite seem to express in verbal or written form. Though I’m not an atheist I agree with many of your points or counter points. Blessings to all.
