The National Geograpic Channel is going to be showing a program on the Gospel of Judas. Here’s what they have to say.

Discovered by chance in the 1970s, a document that lay hidden for nearly 1,700 years emerges today as the only known surviving copy of “The Gospel of Judas.” The Gospel of Judas traces the incredible story of what has happened to the document since it was found, the recent authentication process, and key insight gleaned from its translation and interpretation. The research will reveal fascinating details contained within the document as well as key sections translated from its ancient Coptic script.

Does anybody know anything about it?
 
Judas hung himself shortly after the Last Supper. When did he have time to write this “Gospel”?
 
Even as he was preparing to hang himself, his trusty scribe, Adjudicus, was taking dictation from him 😉

There’s a Gospel of Judas in the texts known as the Nag Hammadi library. These ‘Gnostic’ Gospels were written by a sect of hetrodox Christians who ‘channeled’ the spirit of Judas (or Thomas, or Mary Magdelene, or, indeed Jesus) and wrote a gospel account from their perspective.

The Gospel of Judas is mentioned by St. Irenaeus (i, 31, 1).

Here is the Roberts-Donaldson translation of this section from Irenaeus:

Others again declare that Cain derived his being from the Power above, and acknowledge that Esau, Korah, the Sodomites, and all such persons, are related to themselves. On this account, they add, they have been assailed by the Creator, yet no one of them has suffered injury. For Sophia was in the habit of carrying off that which belonged to her from them to herself. They declare that Judas the traitor was thoroughly acquainted with these things, and that he alone, knowing the truth as no others did, accomplished the mystery of the betrayal; by him all things, both earthly and heavenly, were thus thrown into confusion. They produce a fictitious history of this kind, which they style the Gospel of Judas.

I also asked a very valid question : when did Judas have time to write this “gosepl”? After betraying Jesus, Judas was greatly distraught when he realized what he had done and even tried to undo it by giving the money back. When that failed, he hung himself.

Think about this logically … the man is greatly distraught. He suddenly calms down and writes the gospel. Then he becomes distraught again enough to kill himself … that makes no sense!

I ask again, when did he have time to write this gospel? Before looking at anything else, it needs to be shown how and when it was written.

The question has been already answered.

The Bible states very clearly that mediums,psychics,socerers, NECROMANCERS etc. are a violation of the First Commandment. Read (Deut 18:9-12). This “sect” you are referring to has channeled no one other than the evil one. :eek:

It is a good idea to stay away from all of the supposed Gospels that the Church has already rejected as they can harm your faith.

I was not advocating that anyone become a necromancer, I was answering a query regarding the sensationalising of an ancient text.

I did not say that you thought anyone should become a necromancer. What I did say is that believing in one would be a mortal sin accordinlg to Catholic teachings. It was in fact stated that the “Gospel of Judas” was supposedly “channeled” i.e. necromancy, this makes this supposed Gospel in question mere Blasphemy. Reading this could be very harmful to the faithful. I do not believe that reading books that are blasphemous can aid most Catholics in comprehension. It is rather dangerous.

Last night on EWTN Father Groeschel had discussed the DaVinci Code. He & his guests said that it was not good for the faithful to see the movie or to read the book.It was suggested that if someone was truly faithful, without any doubts there would be no curiousity about this movie or book.
 
Well, that seems very narrow minded to me. I think these things are fascinating. The Gnostic texts give us a real insight into the early Church and the kind of arguments that went on in the first couple of hundred years of Christianity. Further, reading around this subject has merely served to confirm my own beliefs and strengthen my understanding of Christ’s sacrifice for us. I understand why you might want to avoid these things- that’s fine. But some people will always bring up these issues, and someone needs to be prepared to address them, in context. To be ignorant of their context, content and meaning helps nothing.
 
Can anyone give me any insight into the report of this Lost Gospel of Judas…with all the hype of Da Da Vinci…there seems to be a documentary being done on this supposed “new” finding? Help please.
 
Well it’s always interesting when the word “Lost” is used. There are many books that didn’t not make it into the canon of Scripture. It seems like every so many years some whack-job or movie or group talks about this “lost” gospel or that “lost” gospel - usually it’s been secretly covered up by that darn Catholic Church. In reality, it just didn’t make it into the canon. You could probably search the web and find the text to any of these “lost” gospels.

I don’t. The canon was assembled under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus told us would guide us to all truth. What is in the Bible is the inspired word of God. What is NOT in the Bible is then what is NOT the inspired word of God.

Clear as day. . .
