I’m ashamed to say I’ve seen it. Of course it is total fiction. The writers of the movie appeared to research just enough about Catholicism to make them dangerous. I’ve always had the understanding that anyone excommunicated from the faith (which was one of the major topics of the film) could always come back to the faith so long as they made a sincere confession and received absolution for their sins. It was also disturbing to me that Heath Ledger’s character, a priest in the film, felt like he was unable to give his “girlfriend” last rites before she died - and instead turned himself into a “sin-eater”. Again, I’ve always had the understanding that “once a priest, always a priest”…and even if a fallen away priest is forbidden to continue in his duties for whatever reason, he can do so in extreme situations. The movie in my opinion is total bogus.

Through the whole movie,I kept thinking, would’nt it be easyier/safer to just go to confession?I am not saying that I belive the sin eaters really existed. What I may be inclined to believe is that maybe a group was running around at one point claiming they had this ability. The whole thing seemed like a deception to me.As I watched,I took it that the sin eater was bogus and really making sure that the folks that used him where not going to Heaven.
