The Woman of Revelation 12

Hello:

   I saw on a anti-catholic website an article about the woman of Revelation 12.  I believe she is Mary, because only a woman can give birth to someone, not a Nation or Church.  However, one point the author brought up is that the Woman could not be Mary, because the Woman in Revelation 12 is on earth durring the tribulation and persecution described.  How could I answer this?  Thank you.
