TAN Books, sometimes a little over the edge in my view, is presenting this book (originally issued in 1951) as “the best adult Catholic Catchism available.” That may be an exaggeration, but I wouldn’t mind a readable text to supplement, of course, the Catechism. TAN says “All disciplines have been brought up to date.” Has anyone read this book? What is your opinion?

I just bought it given the rave reviews, it seems to be presented well just from glancing through the pages with seperating topics outlining scripture proof, historical proof, etc…It is my next read, only 50 pages left of Karl Keating masterpeice Catholicism and Fundamentalism

Great book! It is also a good peek at the tone of Catholic teaching pre-Vatican II. The doctrines are the same, but the way they are presented is a bit less PC. I loved it. But then, I miss kneeling at the altar rail to receive communion.

I have this book, and am very glad that we bought it. I think it should be the textbook for all confirmation classes & RCIA, that’s how well I think it teaches Catholic doctrine in a readable way (the CCC is more a reference volume, while This Is the Faith is better organized for someone wanting to learn Catholic teaching on a particular subject (the table of contents is the only guide you need, not the index & hope you’ve come up w/ the right word (and not looking up a word which wasn’t chosen for the indexing).

Paul, is there an Indult Mass in your Diocese? I do not know if you are aware of this considering your apparent surroundings, but the Fraternity of Saint Peter is the Order founded by the Pope to function under the liturgical books of 1962 (including Mass), so you can go to the Old Mass everyday rather than the typically abused Novus Ordo. I have plenty of information if you are interested. God bless.

Misalette magazine and EWTN both have offered this book for sale…so I would get too worried about TAN.

It’s an EXCELLENT book and I think it should be the official RCIA book, along with the catechism.

Excellent book, if not the best when It comes to explaining the faith. One of the strengths of this book Is the way It deals with the proofs of the existence of God and the nature of man. Thus not only helping believers but Atheist and Agnostics too.
The book covers all main beliefs of the Catholic faith but does so In a very readable way.
Hopefully one day somebody will use the book and present It using media technology, thus giving us a good program we can use In RCIA.
Canon Ripley has left us a little treasure 👍

Excellent, excellent book. Very easy to read, easy to understand, clear and utterly unrepentant about that. No hemming, hawing, and throat clearing. Very nice. 👍

Thank you to everyone who has replied. This has been very helpful! I think I’ll buy it.

We are going to start using this book in our RCIA program when it starts back up after Summer. Does anyone have any outlines or other teaching materials using this book as the RCIA textbook? Thanks for any help.

I think it is a valuable book to have in your library, because it presents the doctrine using the “old” terminology before they updated it, and it helps you remember the actual terms, rather than the euphimisms. Transubstantiation instead of Real Presence, Mystical Body of Christ instead of Worshipping Community, “fornication” instead of “failure to respect others”.
