I am asking for some thoughts from members here regarding young people on social media…
I am hesitating accepting friend request from a 13 yr old family member. Maybe the positive would be I share mostly Catholic or Pro Life etc. an influence they do not have. On the other hand, social media and constant ( in some groups and families) cell phone use is affecting ability to verbally communicate with one another, is changing the social fabric and I am concerned esp for the young generation.
so, how would you, or have you, responded to a similar situation

thanks

I accepted my niece’s request. She’s going to be on social media whether I accept or not. We don’t communicate directly using it though.

Social media, texting, is how I keep in touch with my extended family.

If it’s a family member, no problem. It’s how you keep up with your family these days.

I would not want to be social media friends with an unrelated person under age 18.

Which social media? Facebook has a lot of settings you can use so not everyone can see everything.

Get off social media and read the Bible and stay close to real friends and family

I’m guessing all your family and friends live right near each other, no?

Be careful not to discuss politics with family on social media.

OP, it’s a family member. Please do not reject their request.

It is a social media platform. Its social and its media. These forums are the very definition of social media. Many users with screenames sharing thoughts ideas etc…

I see you recently joined CAF. Welcome. CAF is not just a question and answer site. It is a discussion, debate, informative and social site where Catholic, non-Catholics and atheists share ideas and often form friendships. That means it is social media.
