You sometimes hear a line of reasoning in discussing who Jesus was that goes something like he was either a, b, or c with c being “he was who he said he was” and I think a or b might be “he was a lunatic.”

If anyone is familiar with how the whole thing goes, I would appreciate it. I know I saw it again recently here on CAF but haven’t been able to find again.

“Lunatic, liar, or Lord” is one popular form. In other words, claiming to be God, He had to be one of those things. G. K. Chesterton said something to that effect, as did C. S. Lewis and others. I think the alliterative form is more recent.

That quote is from C.S. Lewis.

“You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. … Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.”

Yes, the alliterative is the one I was trying to remember but thanks for the C.S. Lewis quote too

In “Handbook of Christian Apologetics” - books.google.lt/books?id=1DH1ZPyyTkIC&pg=PA165&lpg=PA165&dq=Lunatic,+liar,+myth,+guru+Lord&source=bl&ots=Vvx5qvSHSD&sig=–GQZOwWPpv86y9Jba66OepZu2Q&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=Lunatic%2C%20liar%2C%20myth%2C%20guru%20Lord&f=false - an extended version (“Lord, Liar, Lunatic, Myth or Guru”) is discussed.
