Tom Cruise Blackmails Comedy Central Over Scientology South Park

Tom Cruise reportedly got Comedy Central to cancel Wednesday night’s cablecast of the controversial “South Park” episode about Scientology by warning that he’d refuse to promote “Mission Impossible 3,” reports today’s Page Six.

Richard Johnson has the details: 'Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have been told not to discuss the matter - to avoid embarrassing Cruise as they did Isaac Hayes last week when Hayes, also a Scientologist, quit his role as the voice of the Chef character.

*Hayes claimed he couldn’t stand by while “South Park” made fun of religion, but Stone pointed out that Hayes had cashed plenty of checks while the show made fun of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Stone hinted that Hayes was pressed to quit by his minders in the Church of Scientology. *

While people like Tom Cruise easily halt episodes of South Park that are offensive to them, Christians, Catholics, Jews and Muslims have a very hard time of it and never win at the end… I sometimes watch and enjoy South Park, however these double standards I cannot tolerate… 😦

I don’t have a problem with Comedy Central mocking a UFO cult. Let’s face it, that’s what Scientology is. They believe that, ghosts of aliens that a Galactic Ruler Xenu killed millions of years ago, inhabit our bodies.

Good for the scientologists. I think we need to heed their example. I refuse to watch anything on Comedy Central, and I also refuse to see any entertainment produced by any of their parent companies. If Catholics took the same stand, perhaps Comedy Central would take off the trash that they put on there.

I don’t think we should condemn Cruise or Hayes, but instead should follow their example when it comes to how Comedy Central has treated the Christian faith.

I don’t watch Comedy Central either. John Stewart isn’t funny at all and I don’t like cartoons. Things like the Simpsons and South Park don’t intrest me at all. I don’t think I’e ever watched something on CC in my life. So it won’t make a difference if I choose to never watch it. I do condem it fully.

There is a lot of evidence that Scientology is more of a cult than a religion, so I really see no problem with making fun of it. It has ruined a lot of peoples lives. I am also concerned that the Church of Scientology is gaining too much influence in Hollywood. I don’t want it to get to the point where people can’t criticize its controversial teachings.

I think it’s one thing to criticize the misguided beliefs but we should do so with compassion and out of the desire to share the truth, not the heartless cruel ridicule employed by the creators of South Park. I just wish that any Christians that might have been employed by Comedy central would have had the intestinal fortitude to leave the job over the ridicule of Christianity by South Park.
 
In the past I used to watch South Park all the time, but once I saw the episode with the bleeding statue of Mary I decided that I was never going to watch that show again (much less let them get a hold of any of my money!). I encourage others to do the same with other shows if they have to. We don’t need to raise a big fuss and a protest or whatever, just hit them where it really hurts - in the pocketbook.
 
I never considered South Park seriously. I watch and I laugh. People can judge whether they want to follow such parker and stone. I love eric cartman. They express what is in the real life. Beside… I though Hayes the chef was a muslim instead of scientologist.
 
I think this is showing how much influence the Scientology cult has in Hollywood and how much more pressure we must put on Hollywood to change.

o come on people, its a TV show. If you were not going to watch things that poked fun at Christianity you might as well turn off the TV and throw it in the trash. There isnt anything wrong with watching stuff like that as long as you keep it in perspective, its a comedy, not something meant to offend 1.2 billion Catholics or 590,000,000 Protestant Christians.

OK, I am game. I pretty much watch only news now and EWTN. Trash sounds like a good place for the TV. IMHO, if you watch Southpark and other sacriligious programs you are contributing to the downfall of society. I have the right to my opinion, right? I used to be like you and would just think- consider the source, when it came to Hollywood. Now, I turn things off, or never tune in.
 
yes you are very much entitled to your opinion, and i respect that. And of course I’m only a kid (15) so my views are probobly going to be different when it comes to stuff like this.

I would have to say at 15 I may have thought just like you. However when I was 15 we didn’t even have cable so to most scandelous thing was going to “B” rated movies. The Catholic newspaper rated the movies out at the theater and if it was anything buy A, we were not allowed to see it. My parents made one exception my whole growing up years and that was to see West Side Story. The story involves fighting, which is not too graphic but someone does get shot of knifed- I can’t remember which. Also there is one scene where Maria and the lead male are in a room and if you are savy you will know they stayed together, but it is not explicit. Times sure have changed.

I don’t envy your choice of shows to watch. I find it very sad indeed. I think it is my generation that is producing this garbage too or funding it at least. If you are smart and you just may be since you are posting here, you will be very picky and make them improve programming.

That explains it. I had just about the same viewpoint at that age, not that I necessarily think that’s bad.

Although I wouldn’t condemn them for taking a stand, I still think that Hayes should be ashamed for saying he was reacting to their treatment of religion. What they did against religion was fine with him until they did it to HIS religion.

For what it’s worth, ( :twocents: perhaps), I actually did throw my TV in the trash. Haven’t had one for about twenty seven years. Solved a lot of problems on the front end.

I know a few people who did the same thing as well, and I don’t think that they’re strange at all for doing it. I have a tv still, but it rarely ever strays from the news. The only reason I have cable is because it’s a college residence and we got the cable “for free”. I don’t really see myself going out of my way to pay for it.

trust me, this is not the only show i watch. I watch the news every night, i watch EWTN from time to time, some prime times shows, but mostly just news and EWTN.

Before you ally yourself with Scientology, you REALLY need to do some reading up. Really.

BTW, the Constitution of the United States of America guarantees freedom of speech. I don’t watch the show, but I will not be an advocate for censorship. Nazis, Communist Russia, Communist China et al promoted censorship.

I am not allying myself with scientology, I am simply saying that we as Christians should also have the guts to take a stand against that which is against our religion.
