Got a quick question. Does the Church believe that the trinity existed before Christ? If so can you help me out on the reasoning? Such as who was the “Son” of God if the trinity existed before Christ was on earth?

Maybe be a stupid question, but i would sure appreciate any clarification on the matter.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, it’s a great question; one that isn’t asked often enough.

The Trinity existed from all eternity. That is, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit always existed.

Jesus Christ is, by definition, God the Son made man (incarnate); that is, the Divine Person of the Trinity (God the Son) who took on a human nature. It is this union of Divine Person and human nature that constitutes the Jesus Christ of the New Testament.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, good question.

We believe that the Second Person of the Trinity was always the Son of God was always the Word of God.

To put it another way, the Son is “eternally begotten” of the Father. But, the Son came into history as a person when He was incarnated, took the nature of man, and became the Son of God in the human flesh. Jesus didn’t always have His human nature, but He was always, since eternity, the only begotten Son of God.

To remember that, it helps me to keep in mind the “John 1’s”

That is, John 1, and I John 1.

For instance,

John 1:1,2 and 14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

Sure it does! Look at parts of the Nicene Creed that you are probably saying at Mass. (We do).
NICENE CREED:
**We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: **
Code:
[bow during the next two lines:]
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
**We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets. **
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen. You might give some serious study to these articles on God and Christ.

Pax tecum,
Good stuff, I need a refresher every now and then…
