The utraquist heresy goes like this: The Eucharist must be taken under both species to be valid. My question is why is the Host presented as the BODY of Christ and the cup as the BLOOD of Christ. In John 6 Jesus says that we would have to eat FLESH and BLOOD. And He makes the distinction during the Last Supper between His Body and Blood.

Now I full well believe that Jesus is really present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist but how do I defend against this heresy?

This was not explained well in RCIA.

THanks!

You might get some material from the Catholic Encyclopedia at Newadvent.org: Communion under Both Kinds. Please note that the Catholic Encyclopedia at the site is almost 100 years old, but this is an old heresy and it does get treated. The article, since it predates Vatican II, still talks about chalice being strictly forbidden by ecclesiastical law to any but the celebrating priest.

I believe the short answer is you cannot divide Jesus. He is either fully present (in both/either species(es)); body, blood, soul, and divinity or he is not.

Sleep Number is correct.

Cathechism of the Catholic Church: Newest edition:

1377 The Eucharistic presence of Christ begins at the moment of the consecration and endures as long as the Eucharistic species subsist. Christ is present whole and entire in each of the species and whole and entire in each of their parts, in such a way that the breaking of the bread does not divide Christ.207

St. Paul covered this:

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread OR drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaing the body and blood of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 11:27

Notice the OR. If you eat the bread unworthily you are guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. And if you drink the cup of the Lord unworthily you are guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. This would not be possible unless the body and blood of the Lord was present in the host and present in the chalice.
