I have a question about this morning’s Mass. When the priest takes some water and adds it to the wine and says, " By the mystery of this water and wine… etc." Then he says, “Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.”
What if he added water to the chalice with wine but not to the little cruet(?) which held the wine to be put in a crystal glass for the distribution of the blood? Did that wine in the cruet become the blood of Christ at the consecration? Thank you.
Peace of Christ to all.

Not sure!

But, you should definitely let your priest know that by consecrating wine in a cruet and then transferring the precious blood to a glass to distribute he is not following the rules of the Church.

All wine is to be distributed to cups PRIOR to consecration. Also, those cups are not to be made of any breakable substances such as glass or pottery.

The details of this are contained in Redemptionis Sacramentum which was recently published by the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

Hopefully someone can jump in about the water mixing with the wine!

Dear Donna,

If you are simply wondering whether or not the priest is supposed to put a little water in each vessel of wine, the answer is: he doesn’t have to. So, if there are two chalices, he only has to pour water into the main chalice, saying the proper prayer. Whatever wine is on the corporal/altar will be consecrated whether or not water has been added.

I don’t have any documentation to support my claim, however. If I am incorrect, I hope someone will let me know…
