My father grew up Hindu. He was educated by Catholic Missionaries and learned Mathematics, Reading, Catholicism, History, Physics, . . . The Catholic faith was essentially a subject in school for him. He went on to marry a Catholic woman and after his children were born he converted to Catholicism. Sort of. My sister said she wanted dad to go to church with us. Dad, being a devoted father, went through the very poor RCIA we had and was baptized and received into the Church. He didn’t receive the teaching of the Church in it’s fullest. (I believe a lot of teaching was watered down as to not offend.)

Growing up the way he did, by devout Hindu parents with Catholic school teachers, he has amalgamated the two religions in a way that he says that a good person who believes in God will go to heaven. Essentially he says it doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you are a good person who believes in God and prays, that is all that matters. He has many Hindu prayer CDs and Videos that he watches daily. To him, that’s what matters.

With father’s day approaching, I would like to help him see the truth and beauty of our Catholic faith. More than anything, I want to worship God in Heaven with ALL my family. I need to do anything I can to help them know the truth and beauty of the Catholic Faith.

I’ve been praying for dad’s TRUE conversion as far back as I can remember. I feel God weighing on my heart to continue to pray but to be more active in instructing my family in our faith.

Does anyone have a similar situation or have any suggestions as to what I can do or buy for father’s day that might help my dad see God for the devoted, loving and selfish Father he is. The first commandment runs through my mind every time I have a conversation with my dad. Please help me if you can.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
Pray for us.

Does he own or know about the Rosary? If not and if he seems open to it, get him one as well as a SIMPLE booklet on how to pray the Rosary.

If he isnt interested…pray the Rosary FOR HIM. 😉

The last rosary we gave him is hanging on the rear view mirror of his car.

His Hindu prayers are musical and sung. If I could track down some Indian Christian Music, that would be great, but I don’t know where to search.

If anyone has any suggestions where to start searching, please let me know.

So… let me get this straight. You pray to “God”, asking and thanking… but wait… didn’t he give us free will? So if we have free will… he can’t interfere even if you do pray… it contradicts free will.

or

We don’t have free will and everything is already written out? So… if its gonna happen someway why bother praying?

and of course the nay sayers will come up with “We have free will but its ok to ask for his help sometimes he will help”. But its not… FREE WILL cannot have any influence by some “God”, life is pointless.

We don’t “Change God’s Will” through prayer. Prayer helps us to conform our will to God’s. We Pray for others, not to force God’s hand through vain repetition like the pagans do, we conform ourselves to God and thus allow us to be open to how God wants us to act. God uses people to accomplish a good majority of His Will on earth. God is counting on us to react to his Grace and act in accordance to His will. We have the choice to accept the Grace and choose God’s will or turn from the Grace and oppose God’s will. That is our free will choice. God doesn’t force us, we choose.

When someone asks me to pray for my dad, I don’t pray that he will buy me a new car or he will repaint his house, that may not be God’s will. I pray for him to go to heaven and to let me be open to the way in which God would like me to participate in that. It is God’s will that all strive for heaven. Jesus died for us and not just for some of us, but for all of us. God wills the salvation of all. Some don’t cooperate with his will, but that’s their choice.

Your Question isn’t a strict OR, it’s actually neither of those positions.

My dad wants to go to heaven; but, he has his cultural Hindu faith that muddle the truth. If he rejects the Hindu faith, which he would have to do to be truly Catholic, he feels that he would be denying what his parent’s passed down to him. For him it’s a respect issue. The Indian culture has a great respect for all elders and my dad is no different.

My father might have what Catholics call invincible ignorance, but I want to do anything God has ordained for me to help dad get to Heaven.

Off topic, but I’ll respond.

Like most atheists (I don’t know if you are one, but you talk like one) you confuse our “free will” with God’s omniscience. It is a fatal mistake, and one that atheists cannot seem to get around no matter how hard they try.

As one of the “naysayers,” I’ll answer with a rhetorical question: We are free to pray to God to ask His help, and God provides - how does that affect *our * free will, free will that was duly exercised in asking for God’s help? To suggest that the two are intertwined is false logic.

God knows where we are going to end up. That doesn’t mean we did not have free will to get there.

To make the request more simple, I hope. . .

Does anyone know of any Cathoilc Music From Inida? Something from the Hindu style, but with Cathoilc Lyrics and reverence would be desireable.

The only thing that comes to mind for me is the apologetic work of Ravi Zacharias. Unfortunately he’s not Catholic, though he’s darned close! In his public speaking he’s always quoting Chesterton and talks of the Shroud of Turin and seems generally well-disposed to the Church. He grew up in India and is deeply familiar with Hinduism (and has a great accent). Check out the archive of his radio program
Here
His program ‘Jesus among other Gods’ speaks about Christianity in contrast to Hinduism quite a bit. You can listen to it for free there and I think you can purchase a tape set of the same talk. There also may be more resources on that site for you to use. Ravi is anyhow a very inspirational speaker and a great Christian witness.
Good luck and God bless. I’ll pray for your father.

We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact, with a God of our understanding, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

We pray for guidance to find God’s will in our life. God answers all prayers, however sometimes the answer is “no” or “not yet”. I get wrapped up in my self-centered, egotistical desires and wants, God knows what I need.
We do have free will, I can ignore God’s will and suffer the consequences in my life.

hi Krishna, i live in bali-Indonesia. The island of thousand temples. Most of the people are Hindu here and i can see that we all pray for the same God. I also can see that Hindu, Budha, Islam and Christian teachings are true. They are all about love of the same God. But only in Jesus Christ i can see the Biggest love of our Father. His Son was born as a very poor baby and died on crucifix. There is no more sacrifation like this in other religion done by the Almighty Our Father in heaven. He ofcourse welcome good people to live in His eternal house no matter what their religion because He gives us free willing and this is only because of the work of love of Jesus.

It is very providential that I opened this thread. I am going to Mass today in an Indian parish to witness 2 members of our Third Order make their Marian Vow. I will ask them what they recommend.

God bless.

Would your father find the writings of or about Mother Teresa of Calcutta helpful?
