It does indeed - mind you I read the book just to see what all the fuss is about and it’s very poor quality apart from what it says about the Church.

This particular story stems from an apocryphal (written by early Christians but not included in the Bible) book called, I think, ‘the Gospel of Mary’. There are lots of such others floating around, like the Gospel of Thomas or the Protevangelion of St James (which talks about Mary’s early life).

There are many reasons why they weren’t included in the Bible, the reason for the Gospel of Mary is that it clearly contradicts the other Gospel writers, St Paul and the teachings of the Early Church, so is probably untrue.

Mind you that didn’t stop the Merovingian Kings of France of the early Middle Ages from believing that they were descended from a child of Mary Magdalene and Jesus. Clearly the story has been around for a long time. It was also the basis for Martin Scorsese’s film ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’, made roughly 15 or 20 years ago.

I am in no way an expert on this subject, have read about it a little, but I think these other “gospels” were written by some heretical sects, the Gnostics, who were condemned by the early Church. And the writings, from what I understand and have read excerpts from some, are clearly not in line with the gospels that were canonized.

Folks are always creating mischief by making stuff up.

You know who they are… every family seems to have one or two of these trouble makers.

Next time, they say something outrageous, take a note of the “glint” in their eye… they really love creating havoc.

Good point that echos Chesterton, who noticed that people who just “tell it like it is” are usually liars because they are not telling us that they enjoy saying unpleasant things.

They get it from Gnosticism and Outer Space
I walked into a Wal Mart the other day and it was in rows for 5 bucks

The rip off fiction book that people think is TRUE! (check the binding, the word fiction is there)
haha I just shook my head and laughed
I remember when Holy Blood, Holy Grail came out and there was a minor stir, too.

In scholarly circles, this thing is happing all the time - there are books coming out all the time trying to re-explain who and what Jesus was “historically” and scrutinizing the Gospels and Acts under the cracked lens of “conspiracy theories” as to the “real” origins of Christianity, etc

This just doesn’t get as much attention in the public eye.
Sad thing is, the seminaries and divinity schools seem to really be pumping out more heresy scholars than faithful ones.

Peace

Not even the gnostic gospels claim that Jesus and mary Magdalene were married. This is a claim of some 20th centuray conspiracy authors. Holy Blood Holy Grail, which even Dan Brown claims as “historians”. NOTHING could be further from the Truth!

“Isn’t this really just the old Albegensian Heresy??”

No. The Cathars (or Albigensians) had very different beliefs. They thought that satan created the world and everything in it under the guise of being the “one and true god.” In doing so they believed that the Old Testament God was really a reference to him.

So they rejected the Old Testament and the Church (which they saw as built upon satan’s deception). Anything of the material world was a product of the deception. So they rejected medieval society in general. Oaths, marriage, Eucharist, Trinity were all rejected. There was a True God and Jesus was his messenger according to the Cathars.

So, while their heresy is clear and evident, to my knowledge they never believed in Jesus marrying. Although, strangely enough in the book “Holy Blood, Holy Grail” I believe the authors imply that the Cathars were the keepers of the Holy Grail. That’s the book Brown may have illegally copied.

LilyM, I thought you should know this. That what you said about this Jesus Mary Mag story is NOT in the apocryphal writings.

Protestants and Catholics alike dispute this book, but what is sad is that the same Protestants will claim that “Pope Joan” is not fiction.

This book is a work of fiction. It’snot true. I wouldn’t get to worked up over it.
