What does the priest pray during the Scrutinies?

During the Scrutinies, when the catechumens and candidates in our parish are called up before being dismissed prior to the Liturgy of the Eucharist, our priest asks the catechumens to kneel. He then places his hands on the head of each of them and says a silent prayer. It is so beautiful to see and several of the catechumens have tears rolling down their faces. Does anyone know what the priest is saying? I’m not sure if he says it loud enough for the catechumens to hear or not - it doesn’t seem like it. But watching him pray over each of them with such love is so beautiful.

During which week are you referring too? I am at my secular job at the moment, (I work 2nd shift) but when I get home I will look it up in the Rite and post it for you. I promised another person that I would post Weeks 4 and 5 of the rubrics since I posted week 3 already. I will post it when I get home.

I guess any week would be okay. I didn’t realize he prays something different each week since we never hear it! Thank you!

There is nothing in the Rite that specifies what is to be prayed for. This is a spontaneous prayer on the part of the one doing the laying on of hands (in my parish that includes the deacon). I always pray that the Lord will grant to the individual whatever is needed to live out their commitment to Christ and the Church.

There are public prayers, but the rubric for this is simply: “Here, if it can be done conveniently, the celebrant lays hands on each one of the elect.”

Isn’t that awesome! I felt truly blest to be a sponsor a couple of times. It always renews my faith! One year we had 33 canidates which is huge for a very small parish like mine…we felt really blest that year! This year is pretty big too, and one of the people I sponsored is a sponsor himself this year…I had all the pride of a grandma watching him up there!

The laying on of hands, in almost every situation that it occurs in the church is done in silence. There is no spoken prayer.

I’ll be. I guess that’s why his time over each person seemed to vary. His lips were moving but I dont’ think the catechumens could even hear him. How wonderful.
