we recently had a theologian speak after mass on the sacred heart of Jesus. why has this devotion by in large disappeared from catholic churches after vatican II?? pius xii and leo xiii among others dedicated entire encyclicals to the sacred heart, even to the extent of pius xii in his encyclical haurietis aquas saying:
  1. Holy Writ declares that between divine charity, …, and the Holy Spirit, …, there exists the closest bond, which clearly shows all of us, …, the intimate nature of that worship which** must be paid to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ**. If we consider its special nature it is beyond question that this devotion is** an act of religion of high order;** it demands of us a complete and unreserved determination to devote and consecrate ourselves to the love of the divine Redeemer, Whose wounded Heart is its living token and symbol. It is equally clear, but at a higher level, that this same devotion provides us with a most powerful means of repaying the divine Lord by our own.
why, like john xxiii’s constitution veterum sapientia on the promotion and study of latin, have traditionally based papal writings been neglected by today’s catholics and even the vatican? it seems that the chaplet of divine mercy has replaced the devotion to the sacred heart and immaculate heart of Mary.

why do we only look at post VII papal documents to the exclusion of all previous ones?? it is as if we really have a new religion, at least in terms of its accidents.

Many devotions have fallen out of public disuse but that does not mean they are gone. In fact, I believe that it is still highly practiced by those who are preVatican II. However, the problem falls into line when they do not live out their call to baptism…go out and teach all nations. PS that includes praying and teaching devotions like the Sacred Heart etc. If we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem.

Personally, the Sacred Heart has a prominent position in my household and my kids now what He has done for all of us!

I plan on consecrating my new condo to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary after I move in! Devotion to the Sacred Heart is not gone! 👍

i’m a post vii product. i have seen many statues and paintings of His sacred heart, but have never practiced it myself, or been introduced to it. and i went to catholic grade and high school and have been going to mass most of my life. the only place i have seen it was at a traditional parish.

It kind of scares me to think about when I am a bit older and a lot of the Pre VII people dissapear. I know there is always remnent, but they seem kind of thin in my generation! (21ish)

I was just never taught about the sacred heart devotions. I didn’t even know what the divine mercy chaplet was until I saw it on EWTN!

I love the Sacred Heart devotion. It is one of my favorite devotions out there. It has really helped me. I think it would really help a lot of other people too- we need to promote it more.

Oh, I should mention that I’m 23, definately post-Vatican II! 😛

I wish more people knew about devotion to the Sacred Heart. Maybe a few will be interested by this thread. 😉

I’m a post Vatican II baby, and taught my 16-year-old son about the Sacred Heart devotion (I also try to do it myself)…

Can someone here provide a good resource to the Devotion of the Sacred Heart?

We want to start it this First Friday coming.

Thanks,
Luke

A truly beautiful website devoted to the Sacred Heart is found here… be sure to check out the “Love Poems” section of the site…

Many years ago I found out that a priest in my area promotes the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the homes of anyone who asks him. It is a beautiful, short ceremony with specific prayers and mention of all the family members names. A large picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is enthroned in a prominent place in the home. In my home it is over the fireplace.

Another parish had a mission a couple of years ago, and the priest who gave it promoted the Enthronement. From what I heard many families who went to the mission signed up to have the home Enthronement of the Sacred Heart. The purpose of this is to remind the family that Jesus is the head of the house, and they are committed to praying together as a family, daily, before the picture.

So, ideally it is up to the priests to promote these devotions, and if they are too busy with the demands of parish life, then that shouldn’t stop individuals from promoting these devotions in their own families.

Like a lot of pre-V2 to things it seems to have been replaced by the latest is greatest. In this case the Divine Mercy.
I was raised on the Sacred Heart Devotion.

I don’t think it’s lost and gone, I still see a noticeable increase in Mass crowds on First Fridays - obviously they’re doing the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

Great site, Francisco, thanks! 🙂

I grew up post-V2, and fell away for a bit. When I came back to the Church, I discovered the Sacred Heart devotion on my own, probably through reading about St Pio, and I felt immediately drawn to it. Didn’t know much about the background, that it was declining in practice, etc. It just seemed like such a beautiful devotion to me that I had to make it a part of my day.

Yes, we have that also at my parish.

Come to think of it, the purpose for all devotions is to lead us closer to the Lord, and enable us to love Him more. So, whether one focuses on Divine Mercy, Sacred Heart, or both, it is all for the Lord.
