I feel blessed to be a member of a parish in which we hear true orthodox and Scriptural teaching at every Mass, from our pastor, deacon, and our occasional associate. They haven’t talked about the need for frequent confession yet – and I wish they would. Considering how I love that sacrament, perhaps I might write a small article for the bulletin on how it has changed my life.
Back in the Bad Old Days (1970s), I belonged to a “totally cool” parish which had two priests who were as liberal as they could be (this was my childhood parish and I didn’t know any better!). One of them was a frustrated actor and his “homilies” were more like entertainment, complete with props and gags. During one “homily” God called the priest on the telephone (yes, a telephone was on the altar!). At another Mass, this priest carried a huge inflatable Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum pack down the aisle at the Processional (that was in a TV commercial at the time), but I don’t remember why he did. It was just ridiculous.
The Masses at which this priest preached were always standing-room-only.
Man, I wish I could reclaim my liturgical childhood! Ah, but perhaps all of that nonsense made me a stronger Catholic.
