In light of the post regarding teaching from the pulpit (namely, hell being taught) I am just curious as to how many people have actually heard these things at their parish during the homily?

Or not heard these things? Or not heard other things?

American Soldiers = Terrorists

Peter was married = so priests should be

shouldn’t call priests Father

We are the body of Christ, theological differences don’t matter

Not One, at least not one at my University Catholic Center. Maybe a few others elsewhere.

All of them. I live in a Catholic paradise, and Homeschooling capital of the U.S. one of our priests is the Cure of Ars reincarnated. (<-- obviously not literally)

I am insanely envious

Another category is needed. None of the Above! I have heard nothing in 30 plus years.

You are truly blessed. Perhaps your priest could give retreats to priests and pastors around the country.

I haven’t heard all those things from my current Pastor. But I did them from our previous Pastor. And I do from our associate pastor who is leaving in two weeks. We are getting a new just-out-of-the-seminary Priest as a replacement. I am cautiously optimistic. We also have visiting Priests from the Montfort Missionaries and they aren’t big on Church teaching in my experience. So we wouldnt hear about hell from them but you would hear about Mary for instance. And everything elso would be about ‘love’.

I feel blessed to be a member of a parish in which we hear true orthodox and Scriptural teaching at every Mass, from our pastor, deacon, and our occasional associate. They haven’t talked about the need for frequent confession yet – and I wish they would. Considering how I love that sacrament, perhaps I might write a small article for the bulletin on how it has changed my life.

Back in the Bad Old Days (1970s), I belonged to a “totally cool” parish which had two priests who were as liberal as they could be (this was my childhood parish and I didn’t know any better!). One of them was a frustrated actor and his “homilies” were more like entertainment, complete with props and gags. During one “homily” God called the priest on the telephone (yes, a telephone was on the altar!). At another Mass, this priest carried a huge inflatable Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum pack down the aisle at the Processional (that was in a TV commercial at the time), but I don’t remember why he did. It was just ridiculous.

The Masses at which this priest preached were always standing-room-only.

Man, I wish I could reclaim my liturgical childhood! Ah, but perhaps all of that nonsense made me a stronger Catholic.

Hmm. I guess I didn’t consider that NONE of these might have been heard – I should have! :hmmm:

I don’t think I can edit the poll, I guess those of you who have not heard any of them can just post that… 😦

I’ve heard a good bit about the danger of dying in mortal sin and the need to remain in the state of grace. As for Bush’s War, the Pope is against it and so is our pastor. We don’t go wrong following the Pope as he put it.

Very little on the other topics.

Hmmmmmn! I wonder if your Pastor would quote this on all the Pope teachers. Let’s start with liturgical abuses. Is he obedient to the rubrics?

No liturgical abuses in my parish. The pastor is from India and the assistant is Vietnamese. IMO foreign-born/trained priests tend to be quite orthodox.

I don’t understand what you mean by “Pope teachers.”

I’ve heard all of the above except an emphasis on Marian devotions. This is rather surprising since is very Marian–we even have a Marian Mass every Friday. We do have active Rosary groups. Maybe he’s satisfied with the level of devotions in the parish–he would know more about that than me, admittedly. Still, I wish it were promoted from the pulpit more.

We have one deacon who preaches on Confession every chance he gets. Bless him.

I meant teaches… You are lucky. We have “some” disobedient Priests who know the rubrics and still are going to say Mass their own way. This leaves the credibilty of our Priests suspect. Obedience by our Priests is truly exemplary and gives us much direction and hope. We look to them for guidance and for their belief to be witnessed and transmitted to us. Disobedience is not inspiring and give us implicit permission to disobey and disagree with Church teachings.

God loves you, and how very special that is. Then on to the list of upcoming parish activities for the rest of the homily. (These will also be repeated during the closing announcements for those that didn’t pay attention the first time around.) By the way, I thought the idea of introducing the “Favorite Hymn” thread in the Liturgy area was a great way to keep us all from only griping about the bad music we hear. So I’d like to start a “Best Homily” you’ve heard thread over there because surely there have been some. See ya over there!

I put Real Presence, cause I think I’ve heard our pastor mention it in passing once. Our associate pastor talks about it all the time, however (he’s a convert, God bless him). Our current pastor seems to have gone off the deep end. All the homilies he’s given since Easter Vigil haven’t made a lick of sense.

I’ve heard all of them at various times in the 3 years I have been attending Mass at my current church. The priest there almost always delivers a very good homily. He has a wonderful way of showing how the day’s readings (and the Church itself) are relevant and necessary in today’s world. As a Catholic who left the Church before Confirmation and only recently returned after more than 20 years away, it is very important for me to know that my priest can and does teach the Truth in his homilies.
Have a great day!
Judy

We live in a wonderful parish and regularly here homilies on…

Real Presence

Invalidity of Homosexual Unions

… No holds bar teachings on all the hot button topics.

We even once had a homily which mentioned the immorality of…are you ready…CONTRACEPTION.:yup: I almost passed out.
