I am not sure if this is the right forum or not, but I am hoping that someone here can help me…

A quick background to this question. My wife has always been “bothered” at night and my kids have always seen figures at night for years. At first I dismissed everyone as having overactive imaginations, but it has persisted for numerous years.

In the last year or so, my wife and youngest daughter have been increasingly tormented by “spirits” to the point of despair. Both are receiving help from a local priest who is familiar with the area spiritual warfare which has helped, but not alleviated the problem… yet.

One of the things we did was to meet with our Parish priest and renounce all current and family ties to the occult, new age, masonry, etc. Since then, we have been on the lookout for anything in our house that might have ties to the occult or any other evil.

Many years ago, my mom gave us crystals to hang in our window. She had purchased them at a “new age” shop. The owner had said they had protective powers, which she had dismissed that as a bunch of nonsense, but purchased them for their beauty. Given the new age nature I am a bit concerned.

My questions is, what is the appropriate way to destroy occult or new age items, in particular crystals? I am assuming that you don’t want to just toss them in the trash.

While on the subject, what do I consider occult or new age? Do Harry Potter books fall into this category? I don’t want to get carried away, but given the seriousness of this, I don’t want to skip anything that might be an issue.

Your help and prayers are appreciated!

God bless you and your family. I thank God for your family’s new direction.
Certainly dispose of any objects that may pertain to the occult and New age. Burn what you can I imagine, so it doesn’t come into others’ hands.

You could ask the priest to bless your house and to help you consecrate your family to the Lord.

If anyone is afraid, remind them to say the name of “Jesus” which is hated by evil spirits.

And ask St Michael to protect your family.

"On Sunday April 24th 1994, Pope John Paul II recommended this prayer be used by all Catholics as a prayer for the Church when he said:
Code:
'"May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle we are told about in the Letter to the Ephesians: 'Draw strength from the Lord and from His mighty power' (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (Revelation 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had a very vivid recollection of this scene when, at the end of the last century, he introduced a special prayer to St. Michael throughout the Church. Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world."'

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen. "

Having a priest over to bless the house is a good idea. Have him over for supper, most of these guys are on their own for meals.

This is delusional talk, I’m a witch and I practice nothing but good magic, nothing with healing properties would harm you, not all occult is evil.

I have nothing to add since the other posters explained it so well. But as for the Harry Potter books, I don’t think you need to toss them. I’m an HP fan myself and most people like myself are just interested in the characters themselves rather than magic itself. The Vatican hasn’t labeled them as occult or new age. The Pope never never said that Catholics can’t read HP but he more or less said that people should think about what kind of things they are reading.

They do not want to throw them in the trash because that is an improper way to practice witchcraft. Even though our scripture forbids us from practicing witchcraft, or consorting with witches, these people still want to follow the proper sorcery and incantation regimen that proper witchcraft requires for ‘deactivating’ these talismans. I’m sorry for this family.
For the rest of the Christians out there who may find themselves in a similar situation, just simply throw the stuff in the trash and believe in the Power of God to protect you. Believe in Jesus Christ’s promise to be with you and protect you (i.e. "…where two or more are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst…).

Stop playing Satan’s game. Stop trying to PRACTICE witchcraft to supposedly rid yourself of witchcraft.

Oh, and don’t fall for the previous commentor’s Satanic advice to pray to a Saint to “help” you. Instead, pray to the Saint to intercede with God on your behalf. Otherwise you perpetuate Satan’s falsehood that “others” are as Powerful as God. Even Jesus Christ proclaimed that His power was NOT HIS OWN, but rather came from the Father.

Take them to a concrete sidewalk or driveway, and SMASH them with a hammer until they are unrecognizable. Pray while doing this. Then, either throw them away, or if there is jewelry, you might consider selling it (silver and gold are at high prices right now). I just smashed all my stuff.

But I would also get a lot of holy water and blessed salt, and have your house blessed by a priest.

All occult is evil. White or black magic. Satanic.

Let’s not be ridiculous here… crystals are not occult… they are nature’s amplifiers of energy-that’s all- if your house is of good energy and love- it will amplify it… if it is of suspicion and negativity, fear etc-it will amplify that… that’s of your doing- not the crystals…you have crystals in radios, watches etc…and let’s not forget Rosaries-nothing to fear- it’s the intent-and they were given in love and protection…however- that said… your fear is like a beacon to negative lower energies-it’s what invites them and feeds them… so lose the fear- focus on the love of God protecting you… and every morning when you wake and every night before sleep- say a prayer of protection for Michael and Jesus to intervene through God’s love… and say outloud “I only accept what comes through God’s love-anything else must leave”… then TRUST you are in good hands- you have angels and Loved ones in Spirit around you-… … again- focus on the love of God… no fear:signofcross:

Burn them with fire, or, to get the proper emotion in to the saying, Purify it by fire. For crystals, if the fire you make, or have the facilities to contain, is not of sufficient heat to destroy them (most crystals won’t crack in a standard wood-type fire, at least not in a reasonable amount of time or without being removed and submerged in to ice-cold water while still hot: source, I used to forge armor at a Renaissance faire, which also had new age items sold at it, and which some people would want forged into their new breastplate or helm), I would shatter them with a hammer (insert burning for good measure here if you feel it necessary), and pour blessed water over them.

(Crystals will shatter in the flame of an acetylene torch, as well as within even a small blast furnace or blacksmith’s furnance, and they will generally be destroyed completely by dissolution in a glass-blower’s furnace.)

Remember also the name of our Lord, “at which ever knee shall bow”, and the Sign of the Cross, at which demons flee (for the Prince of Demons was conquered by the Cross). Remember also sacramentals, such as the medal of St Benedict (imprinted with the initials for “step away, Satan”, Vade retro Satana), holy water, etc. Consult further with your priest.

Unlike many Catholics or Christians of otherwise equal traditionalism or conservatism with myself, I do not believe fantasy books such as Harry Potter are occult, although I don’t believe young children (who play “make-believe” and have a harder time differentiating reality from imagination) should be exposed to them.

I’m sorry April- that icon looks like you are flipping me off…:eek:LOL…

…apparently most of you forgot that many rosaries are crystal … just have the crystals blessed … and then be at peace with this… say the prayer and say the words outloud-
negative lower energies can’t stay where they aren’t invited …and can’t live where they aren’t fed… trust God in all things- thought word and deed…lose the fear

The practice of the occult is like opening a door to the spiritual realm, correct?

If a door is opened and nothing good will walk through, then the “protective charm” is not worth potential risk of demonic activity.

Therefore, even if witchcraft is practiced with good intentions, it is still demonic. 🤷

See where we’re coming from?

Toss the new age rubbish in the trash. It doesn’t require any special treatment.

Centuries old advice on how to fight and remove evil spirits
And so, to summarise the spiritual weapons needed to rid oneself or one’s home of evil spirits:
First and foremost is prayer which draws us closer to God; fasting in a spirit of reparation for one’s sins; Confession; Holy Communion; Eucharistic adoration; Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Angels and Saints, asking for their heavenly help and intercession; and the usage of Sacramentals (holy water, blessed salt, holy cards, medals, burning of blessed candles and blessed incense etc.)
Finally, if your house appears to be the source of the demonic infestation, then get it blessed by a priest.
*Note: There is a special ritual of prayer called an “exorcism blessing” that any Priest can recite to give salt and holy water a special blessing. This exorcised salt or holy water is especially powerful against evil spirits.
Fr. Corapi - Holy Water and Blessed Salt

Blessed Salt
Thus used non-superstitiously, modest amounts of salt may be sprinkled in one’s bedroom, or across thresholds to prevent burglary, in cars for safety, etc. A few grains in drinking water or used in cooking or as food seasoning often bring astonishing spiritual and physical benefits, as I have personally witnessed many times. As with the use of Sacraments, much depends on the faith and devotion of the person using salt or any sacramental. This faith must be Jesus-centered, as was the faith of the blind man in John 9; he had faith in Jesus, not in the mud and spittle used by Jesus to heal him.
<…>
In light of this, we can see why Vatican II states that “there is hardly any proper use of material things which cannot thus be directed toward the sanctification of persons and the praise of God.” (art. 61 of Liturgy document). Hence new sacramentals may also be added when rituals are revised (art. 79). Blessed salt is certainly not a new sacramental, but the Holy Spirit seems to be leading many to a new interest in its remarkable power as an instrument of grace and healing.
Any amount of salt may be presented to a priest for his blessing, using the following official prayer from the Roman Ritual:
“Almighty God, we ask you to bless this salt, as once you blessed the salt scattered over the water by the prophet Elisha. Wherever this salt (and water) is sprinkled, drive away the power of evil, and protect us always by the presence of your Holy Spirit. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Exorcism Blessing for Water and Salt
(Priest vests in surplice and purple stole)

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R: Who made heaven and earth.

Exorcism of Salt (necessary for Exorcism of Water)
P: O salt, creature of God, I exorcise you by the living (+) God, by the true (+) God, by the holy (+) God, by the God who ordered you to be poured into the water by Elisha the prophet, so that its life-giving powers might be restored. I exorcise you so that you may become a means of salvation for believers, that you may bring health of soul and body to all who make use of you, and that you may put to flight and drive away from the places where you are sprinkled; every apparition, villainy, turn of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit; adjured by him who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire.

R: Amen.

P: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly implore you, in your immeasurable kindness and love, to bless (+) this salt which you created and gave to the use of mankind, so that it may become a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it. May it rid whatever it touches or sprinkles of all uncleanness, and protect it from every assault of evil spirits. Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.

SACRAMENTALS

This is delusional talk, I’m a witch and I practice nothing but good magic, nothing with healing properties would harm you, not all occult is evil.
There is no such thing as ‘good’ magic. All occult practices, whether the person has evil intent or not, open the door to the evil one. Turn away from this, please.
St. Michael is an archangel and it is his job, given to him by God, to protect people from evil spirits. Those who ask for his help are fully aware that his power comes from God, as it states in the prayer.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

The reason I smashed my occult items is so that others wouldn’t find them and resurrect them. I don’t think throwing things away is a good idea. Break them, smash them, burn them. Pour holy water over the bits, and THEN throw them away.

If you’re already seeing a priest about all this, why don’t you just ask him?

You could have a priest bless the crystals instead of getting rid of them.

I was wondering the same thing (concerning why not just ask the priest you’re already consulting.)

When Mom was staying with me last summer, she had a plethora of stuff that had been given to her by a friend who supposedly is a psychic. I consulted with my spiritual director, who instructed me to just pitch them, after consulting her and telling her why I didn’t want them in the house, and don’t ascribe any power to them.
