My favorite approach is 1) Drive to the parish; 2) Get out of the car; 3) Enter the church for Mass; 4)Go home 5) Repeat next time Mass is offered.

I am particularly fond of the Rhineland school of mystics from Germany: Meister Eckhart, Blessed Henry Suso, Johannes Tauler, Blessed John Ruysbroeck (Flemish but still connected to this school), Angelus Silesius (a later proponent of their thought) etc.

Eckhart, Suso and Tauler were all Dominican whereas Ruysbroeck was Augustinian.

Why? The sheer beauty, originality and profundity of their thought. 🙂

I’ll say more tommorrow.

I am tempted to post a poll asking what percentage of Catholics could tell the difference between:

Franciscan
Dominican
Augustinian
Ignatian
Carmelite
Benedictine
Salesian

I am totally and completely Ignatian!!!

I did the Spiritual Exercises (the 19th Annotation) a few years ago,
and it changed my life!! :getholy:

The tools for discernment have helped me in every aspect of my life and using my imagination in prayer is something I always did and thought was “wrong” because I was more comfortable doing that than praying rote prayers.

I also have a passion for learning, so the intellectual side of the Jesuits appeals to me.

If my life circumstances were different (I wasn’t a married woman:p), I would want to be a Jesuit! 😃

Franciscan-

That total dedication to following Our LORD, in circumstances of complete poverty and chastity

You should post a quick note about each one… because I, among many, probably, have no idea.

I will agree with this post, since the only two I have any familiarity at all are Franciscans and Dominicans, and even these my knowledge is limited.🤷

I’m kind of bummed nobody uses Francis De Sales’ approach to the spiritual life… 😦
