When are our souls created?

We were discussing the creation of our souls in class last week. Someone brought up that our souls are created at conception. But then someone else brought up the quote, “Before you were in the womb, I knew you”. Does this mean our souls have been in existence long before we were conceived, or am I assuming it that’s whole space time continuum thing? By this, of course, I mean that God exists outside of time. What is the Church’s teaching on this?

Good question. Where exactly in the body do you think the soul is? Is it contained in the brain? I mean a person can lose a lot of body parts and yet they still have self awareness and are alive.

“Before you were in the womb, I knew you” denotes the foreknowledge of God. He knows all things including what has yet to transpire (a person’s future birth). The soul is created at conception. 🙂

That makes a lot of sense to me. Each of us were in the mind of God before we were conceived, “He knew us”. Then, when we are conceived, he gives us a soul.

Someone on this thread has, as their signature, something that struck me from C.S. Lewis: “*I am not a body, that happens to have a soul. I am a soul, that happens to have a body.”
