Has anyone read When the Well Runs Dry: Prayer Beyond the Beginnings by Thomas H. Green, S.J.?

My wife gave it to me a couple of months ago so I could read it while travelling for work. Neither of us had ever heard of it before and she just stumbled on it at the bookstore at the monastery near us. I have been having a hard time with a very dry prayer life and a general feeling of being lost and disconnected spiritually, despite daily Mass and frequent prayer and Adoration. She thought it seemed like a good fit.

I was kind of skeptical at first just because it was written by a Jesuit (I know that’s unfair, but I seem to see more of the Fr. McBrien types than the Fr. Pacwa types ). However, it seems to be based very much on the writings of St. John of the Cross. I’m about 3/4 of the way through it and I’ve gotten a lot out of it so far. I’m just wondering if anyone else knows anything about it, or if anyone else has read it and what your experiences have been?

It is a very useful book written by Fr.Thomas Green, Jesuit. I believe he is based in the Philippines as an academic, and was raised in in New England. From my knowledge he is orthodox and draws primarily upon the writings and mystical spirituality of St.Catherine of Sienna and St.John of the Cross, and also St. Teresa of Avila, to help readers understand the stages of prayer life. He offers this guidance as one who has given much spiritual direction to others under his care. There is no New Age stuff in his writings. I highly recommend his books as useful and to make relevent analogies.

Fr. Green has also written “Weeds Among the Wheat”, which is my all-time favorite. After reading about a half-page, my mind explodes. Fabulous book.

I happened on two of Fr. Green’s book at a Jesuit retreat center, and read them on the recommendation of my director, at a time when they were particularly appropriate for my situation. I must say that they have been some of the most helpful spiritual books I have ever read. Maybe it was the timing, but they were exactly what I needed at the time.
