Why do we need to go for confession? Is there forgiveness if we are sorry for our sins but do not go for confession?

We need to go for confession for serious (grave) sins only (also called mortal sins) - if you want I’m happy to point you to where you can get information on the difference between mortal sins and lesser sins, or you can search the library here, I’m sure there’s plenty of good information.

The main reasons for going to a priest for confession are outlined here but in particular it is mentioned in Scripture (John 1:9).

More importantly - knowing that you can confess your sins directly to Jesus acting through the priest, and hear Jesus telling you through the priest with certainty that you’re forgiven, and will receive God’s grace in the sacrament to strengthen you against sinning again - why WOULDN’T you confess?

What is true sorrow for sins? Is it the firm resolution to never sin again? What if you sin in the same way again? How do you receive the grace to not repeat a sin?
What did Jesus do and mean when He specifically breathed on the Apostles and told them whosoever sins they forgive they are forgiven?
Why did the early church hold confessions?
Why did Paul when writting to Timothy, who by the way was a priest, tell him he also needed to confess his sins to other priests?
Confession is, because God mandated it, it is the fulfillment of the Jewish practice of sin offerings, except now Christ is our sacrefice, but we still need to bring our sorrow to the priests, just as the Jews did.

Grace from prayer and the sacraments (especially the Holy Eucharist and confession)

I love this one!! - I’m pretty sure that there are only 2 occasions where “God breathed on” anybody. One was Adam - to give physical and spiritual life. Then, on the apostles to give BACK spiritual life that had been lost!

Because they are human and they sin.

Hope that helps a little.
God bless,
Angel
