Why Muslims not eat Pork?

What does it say in the Qu’ran that eating Pork is wrong for Muslims? And what happens if they do eat it?
 
I was lead to believe, by my dad, a fairly ‘traditional’ man-i.e has some ignorant prejudices against everyone, but also by a Muslim friend, who is liberal however so his beliefs may not conform to standard Islamic teaching that the belief in not eating pork was a tradition (possibly branching from the Jewish tradition) because pork spoiled quickly in desert heat and lead to food poisoning. But I’m not an Islamic scholar, or a butcher so I can’t verify either statement.

Everything spoils when left in the desert heat 🙂

There is a couple of verese that mention the prohibition of eating pigs…here is one, saying that it is not clean.

Say: I do not find in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden for an eater to eat of except that it be what has died of itself, or blood poured forth, or flesh of swine-- for that surely is unclean– or that which is a transgression, other than (the name of) Allah having been invoked on it; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring nor exceeding the limit, then surely your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
(6:145)

The verse in the OT says something similiar. I wouldnt call it following Jewish tradition, but following Divine law, which God had mandated since thet time of Moses. And God knows best.

and the swine, as he divideth the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you.” (Leviticus chapter 11 verse 7 and 8)

yea yea i know nowadays they supposedly clean it properly blah blah…
 
Another possible reason is that pigs need a lot of water - my parents have a pig farm in their area so I know a lot of trivia like this.

Water being scarce in desert climes, I can imagine that Jews and Muslims might be discouraged from it purely for that reason if nothing else.

Why do pigs lie in mud?

Since March 1 is National Pig Day, Bob and I want to honor the snouted critter by busting the No. 1 myth of pigs: pigs aren’t dirty animals.

Anyone who’s been told to “Clean up that pigsty of a room!” knows that most people think the word pigsty is used to describe a dirty place. And, since pigsty is another word for pigpen, I guess it’s easy to understand why you might think pigs are dirty animals.

Here’s the truth: pigs prefer to keep themselves clean. The problem is that pigs can’t sweat very much. Sweating helps you keep an even temperature. As sweat evaporates, it absorbs heat away from your body. Because hogs have very few sweat glands, they have to find other ways to keep cool. Pigs would much rather lounge in a clean pool of water, but that usually isn’t an option. So, pigs lie in mud. The mud absorbs their bodies’ excess heat. If pigs live inside barns, farmers make sure the temperature is just right for the future pork chops and bacon.

All in all, pigs get a bad rap about being messy. But once people learn the truth, they’ll think pigs are full of smart stuff!

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:
  1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an
The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

“Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah.” [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

“And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you”.

“Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you.”[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

“And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass.”
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.
  1. Consumption of pork causes several diseases
The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.
  1. Pork has fat building material
Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.
  1. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth
The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.
  1. Pig is the most shameless animal
The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say “you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife.” If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common in the affluent circles of Bombay.

I know you are probably sincere, but that’s just silly. There is no link (sausage or otherwise 😃 ) between the eating of pork and wife swapping.

Ok, can u tell me why you and christians do eat pork despite its
prohibited in the Bible:

If you eat other animals then do you behave like them? Sheep, goats, cows, donkeys, camels? What if you eat fish, do you start having irresistible urges to live in salt water?

Jesus (thank heavens) taught us that ‘nothing that goes into a man’s mouth (ie food) can make him unclean, only what comes out of it (what a man says) can make him unclean’. God is interested in what is in our hearts, not whether or not we eat pork or follow other dietary restrictions.

Actually pigs are cleaner than nearly every other animal. Sure they love to bathe in mud to protect themselves from sunburn. As I’m sure the mud is washed off by the time the pig is killed, butchered and cooked, this is surely irrelevant.

And as about 35% of the world’s population are Christian, and about 23% of the world’s population live in China where pork is the most commonly eaten meat, it is mathematically impossible that “most people in the world don’t eat it”.
 
In some heart surgery a pig’s valve is used to replace a defective human one. Would a Muslim allow this?
 
All the sudden, I have this craving for a big slab of ribs!

The OT is from God, right? So God says “dont do it b/c its unclean” not b/c the pigs will drink all your water. I think if that is what is meant, that is what God would have said.

So the reason, that you and I must accept b/c its written in both our Holy books, is that God said no for the simple reason that they are unclean for us to eat 🙂

(i understand that you beleive Jesus abrogated that later, but still, you believe it was originally divine guidance)
