when were they supressed? could you give us a link in regards to this?

We really would need to look at what was going on a specific country to give a good answer to your question for that country.

Jesuits tended to get involved in spreading the Catholic faith, which did not go over well in certain countries run by Protestant leaders (example, England). Jesuits also have sometimes involved themselves in political intrigue which made them unwelcome. Finally, at times Jesuits were in conflict with other established orders in certain countries, so there was some bad feeling there.

Jesuits have been a pretty dynamic and often controversial bunch.

So basically political and religious rivalry?

If you’re interested in the specific suppression about which Roseeurekacross posted the article, you can see all the causes for each country mentioned in the article. It would be what you mentioned, plus economic rivalry in the cases where Jesuits were seeking to own land for large plantations and to sell the products that they made on the land with native labor. In the New World they would convert the indigenous peoples and get the converts to work on their plantations, then sell the goods back in Europe and make money.

As a previous poster said, it varied according to the country. In many places the Jesuits were “suppressed” by the government, along with the whole Catholic Church. In other places they were singled out. Since they were a unified, worldwide order they were perhaps considered more dangerous than local clergy who reported to local bishops.

At one point the Church itself suppressed them, but only after they had already been banned in most places. Other countries said suppress the Jesuits, or we will suppress the Church. Individual Jesuits continued to minister in their local dioceses. It must have seemed almost miraculous, like a phoenix arising from the ashes, when the elderly remaining men again gathered as an Order.

Pray for the Jesuits.
