I’m currently a high school senior and I’ve finally been offerred a job for the first time at a local movie theater. 🙂 They’ve requested for me to work Friday-Sunday evenings. I’m wondering if working on Sunday evenings would be ok? I would still be able to attend Mass w/ my family on Sunday morning or afternoon. But I’m still not sure if working on Sunday would be ok. Also, I’ve been wondering if it’s ok to shop or eat at a fast food place on Sundays after Mass?

I don’t think it’s a problem. Especially since it’s only Sunday evening. As a teenager, I think it’s more important to learn the responsibility of working and earning your own money.

When I was in high school and college, I worked at Six Flags. I had several very religious Catholic friends from very strick families who worked on Sundays. I’ve never seen it be an issue until I came to this forum.

Gook luck,

As far as the work goes, it’s fine. Firstly it’s only a few hours in the evening (which is fine) and not the whole day (which may not be). Secondly I assume it’s the only work option open to you at the moment - though you might want to keep looking for non-Sunday options if possible. Thirdly I assume you’re working because you need to and not so that you can buy a third house/fourth car or anything.

As for shopping - I’d say it’s probably fine. Often people can’t make enough time to go during the week, that may be your situation. Secondly you’re probably supporting businesses and employees that stay open and working on Sundays because they need to. After all, where would you be if your theatre didn’t stay open on Sundays so that you could support yourself with the extra work?

As for eating out, as far as I’m concerned it’s a total non-issue. It’s something most people need to do on occasion, and assuming that you’re going with friends or family it’s just another way of socialising and a much more appropriate thing to do than most other social activities.

If you have concerns bring it up with your priest next time in Confession.

When my teenager went to work at MacDonalds she told them that she could only do a pm shift on Sundays. A few months on they are beginning to roster her on Sunday mornings and she is going to talk to the Manager about it today. I recommended she not work Sundays AT ALL and stick to it.

You should read about Our Lady of La Salette and what she said about Sunday work.
