I have that one 😃

Two part question, actually:
  • Favorite Merton book (see stipulation 😃 )
  • Favorite non-Merton monastic book
Over to you 🙂

“Seeds of contemplation”
The original briefer version I almost knew by heart as a teen.

The more accurate later translations of Therese’s autobiography

Merton- “No Man is an Island”

non-Merton- “The Interior Castle”

Other than Seven Storey Mountain (which i do like, btw), i’d have to go with In the Dark Before Dawn as my second favorite.

I don’t really have a particular favorite non-Merton monastic book. :o

Actually, the only Merton book that inspired me was 7-Story Mountain. I tried to follow his thought in another book, but it was so dry I couldn’t get a shred of inspiration and finally discarded it. Not sure, but it may have been Seeds of Contemplation. I just remember being excited that it was on contemplation, but it left me void and dry.

A monastic book? I enjoyed Practice of the Presence of God, by Brother Lawrence.

No Man is an Island

The Imitation of Christ by Thomas AKempis (does that count?)

Merton: Seeds of Contemplation
Non-Merton: Cloud of Unkowing (can’t wait to read the new translation)
