UPDATE, SATURDAY 3AM: With Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s American Sniper shooting down more box office records this weekend with an updated industry projection of $61.2M, another star-studded bomb went off at the B.O. following last weekend’s mortdecai 3Blackhat debacle: Johnny Depp’s $60M R-rated comedy Mortdecai flatlined with an estimated $1.6M on Friday at 2,648 theaters, on track for a horrendous $4.6M weekend in eighth place – far below the $10-$12M that distributor Lionsgate was expecting for the OddLot co-production.

People would rather watch a movie about an American war hero rather than an effete, quirky English Lord unable to do anything without his wife’s permission.

Perhaps most people really don’t want the popularized version of ‘new manhood’ after all.

I saw Mortdecai and it was funny in a ‘one-time-only’ kind of way.

But it had no sort of sympathetic hero, only the Depp character who is surrounded by enormous wealth though he hasn’t the competence to do much of anything and lives under the thumb of his wife. Most movies kind of need this to draw in the audience.

‘American Sniper’ for its second box office win should tell the weirdos running Hollyweird a little something. It should tell the cultural wizards re-engineering our society even more.

Veterans Today (VT) is a website that bills itself as a “military veterans and foreign affairs journal.” And, indeed, many of its contributors are military veterans or veterans’ advocates from across the political spectrum. VT also offers some information about veterans’ benefits (lifted from the Veterans’ Administration) and links to home and other loans for vets.

But start reading the posts, and you’ll find something else entirely: myriad claims that there was a conspiracy behind 9/11 (Israel orchestrated it, in cahoots with the American government), that the American government is a puppet (of Israel), that the Holocaust never happened or was greatly exaggerated (Jews made it up to manipulate non-Jews), and, most recently, that Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, is a pawn (of Israel).

Notice a theme?

Gordon Duff, the senior editor and chairman of the board at VT, is a prolific proponent of these anti-Israel conspiracy theories, including the Wikileaks claims. Though he does occasionally write on issues and policies that directly affect American veterans (he claims to be a Marine Vietnam veteran), most of his ammo is reserved for churning out articles that claim 9/11 was a U.S./Israel conspiracy and that Israel controls the U.S. government. According to Duff and VT contributors like author and attorney Jeff Gates, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a civil rights watchdog group, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a lobbying group, are Zionist-controlled fronts for Israeli intelligence operations.

In December, Duff claimed that “insiders at the ADL” admitted that Israel was behind Wikileaks, perhaps a slam at an ADL piece a few days earlier. In that article, the ADL pointed out that many of the conspiracy theories about Israel and Wikileaks “are being promulgated by … anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist” Gordon Duff. Marilyn Mayo, a director at the ADL Center on Extremism, told Hatewatch that Duff did not speak to anyone at the ADL and, like other conspiracy theorists, he “makes information up and presents it as the truth.”

You don’t need wiretaps to figure out what side these guys are on. They tell you exactly who they are and what they believe and who they are rooting for. They puporting to be be pro-American but actually a psychological warfare unit of the War on Israel, along with the rest of the 9-11/RFK/JFK conspiracy theorist.

They always stand up for Palestine, always apologize for Al Queda and attack “Zionists” (Israel and Jews) as threats to the world… These people are not crazy, they are trying to promote a point of view supportive of the Global Islamic Movement.

Just reading his nonsense about snipers makes me feel fairly comfortable that he isn’t an actual veteran. Most of the local Jihadists are shephards and local militia, so what?

His implication that most sniper kills are somehow friendly fire is simply a treasonous lie.

Then there is this: “What has been confirmed is that some American units serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan simply murdered civilians, and we mean women and children in “drive by” type shootings. They would drive down the road and simply shoot at people walking by. Americans have been convicted of this. Another “trick” is to drive by a group of kids and toss a hand grenade at them.
Were these deaths added to the “sniper kills?” My guess would be yes.”

That is a cartload of low grade nonsense.

Well, I think the other thing working against Mordecai is it’s pretty much a re-do of “The Pink Panther”- a bungling inspector. I’ve only seen the trailers but- I don’t see enough of a difference/approach to warrant seeing it in the theater. Might rent it/see it on Netflix but the trailers certainly don’t give me much incentive to plop down the money to see it in a theater.

Well, I think the other thing working against Mordecai is it’s pretty much a re-do of “The Pink Panther”- a bungling inspector. The thing with the inspector in PP is that he had state authority and that contrast with his bungling manner where he also lucked into solving everything was just hilarious, not to mention his boss who became a paranoid loon from knowing that the inspector was an imbecile but kept gaining undeserved praise for his luck.

But still mordecai was funny, a definite DvD movie.
