The tiny Serbian-American population once celebrated Rod Blagojevich’s hard-to-pronounce name in the headlines. He was a first-generation son of Serbian immigrants, moving up in politics and remaining loyal to his roots by serving onn a mission to free American hostages in Yugoslavia during the Balkan Wars.

Today, though, Serbian Americans—and even more broadly, members of the Eastern Orthodox church—aren’t pleased to see the non-stop news reports about the country’s only Serbian Orthodox governor.

Is the Governor a practicing Orthodox?
I’ve never heard a thing about his faith, other than that he is Orthodox.

Blagojevich now lives in Ravenswood Manor, but he said during an interview for his run for governor that he currently doesn’t attend a single church regularly. Still, as the son of Serbian immigrants to Chicago, he remains an icon for the Serbian-American population and remains active in their religious community. Back in April, he visited a Serbian Orthodox monastery and parish in the Third Lake, a northern suburb.

Well, at least some of the holier than thou EOs can no longer claim that only Catholic Politicians are corrupt or ignore Church teachings.

I hate the fact that people will bring his faith up in this issue.
 
The same brouhaha was raised when Michael Dukakis ran for president, even though he stood de facto excommunicated for marrying a non-baptized person in a Unitarian service, and not having his children baptized.

I had forgotten that one.
 
As I recall one Maine’s senators is/was Orthodox. She was excommunicated for her support of abortion. That puts them one up on us. 😦
