‘Who makes America?’

Thousands of people marched through downtown Columbia on Monday waving American flags and chanting “Si se puede!”

Their words translated to “We can do it!” as the crowd of mostly Hispanics demonstrated for immigration reform that would pave the way for millions of illegal immigrants to legally live and work in South Carolina.

“I want to have the right papers,” said Jose Luis Ruiz, 22, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who lives in Lexington. “I think it will be better for us and better for America.”

The biggest problem I can see with granting illegals worker’s status is the message it will send to millions of others in Mexico who would take it as a sign that the borders of the USA are completely open. Any legislation would have to be very clear that it only applies to those who have been in this country for a certain amount of time and it ought to favor legal immigrants over illegal ones who have been patiently wading their way through red tape in order to get the worker’s status. The red tape ought to be cut for them first as well as an equitable program worked out for the millions of illegals already here. That’s just my :twocents:
