“Amen, amen, I say to you,..." (Jn 13: 16 - 20)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Whenever we hear Jesus’ words: “Amen, amen, I say to you…” we need to open wide our hearts and listen - prayerfully with Mary our Mother. There’s so much to listen to in today’s Gospel for Mass:

When Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, He said to them:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master
nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I am not speaking of all of you.
I know those whom I have chosen.
But so that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
The one who ate My food has raised his heel against Me.
From now on I am telling you before it happens,
so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send
receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the one who sent Me.”(Jn 13:16-20)

These are words John heard Jesus say at the Last Supper. It is significant to me that it was also John who stood at the foot of the Cross with Mary. Jesus’ washing the feet of His Disciples is such a sign of His Love and Humility! Jesus teaches us not only by what He says but by what He does.

Remember: “…Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” (Lk 2:19) and
“… his mother kept all these things in her heart.” (Lk 2:51) Mary and John in their Love and Humility were unafraid to stand under Jesus’ Cross. They saw and heard deep in their hearts His Commandment to love as He loved and serve as He served.

I put into bold print words Jesus spoke after showing His disciples what love and humility is and what it means to be like Him Who is our Master and Who it is Who will send them (and all His Church) as His loving and humble servants. Jesus tells them (and us) if we understand this, we’re blessed in doing it.

We need to ask the Holy Spirit to increase in us His gift of Understanding whenever we are listening to Scripture. We need the supernatural light of Faith. (for an excellent article on the difference between Natural and Supernatural Faith see HERE

Words not in bold are sad to read: not all do the Truth Jesus speaks.

Final words are in bold – “Amen, amen I say to you…” so we listen, believing Jesus and the Father Who sent Him and asking the Holy Spirit if someone is truly sent by Jesus or not? John reminds us in his First Letter not to trust every spirit (1 John 4: 1-6).

Come Holy Spirit. Jesus we trust in You and the Father. Mother Mary pray for us.
