From First Things (Nov 05):

Actress Jane Fonda’s 1998 conversion to Christianity received considerable attention. She recently told the Baltimore Sun, “I believe people have different ways of approaching the Word. For me, it’s metaphor, written by people a long time after Christ died and interpreted by specific groups. I read the gospels that aren’t included in the Bible. These make me feel good about calling myself a Christian.” She may be on to something. The ones that are in the Bible sometimes make me feel bad about calling myself a Christian.

I think it’s a good idea to read the so called Gnostic Gospels. It certainly adds colour to the early Church!

why do reading the gospils make you feel bad about calling yourself a Christian?

Mark,

I believe people have different ways of approaching the conversion of Jane Fonda. For me, it’s a metaphor of a self-absorped culture that can’t tell the difference between worshipping God and mere self indulgence in folly.

I read the gospels that aren’t included in the Bible. These make me laugh.

It is more likely that you are on to something.

Because they reveal how pitiful we are. Philthy rags…

true, humanatity is tainted with the stain of sin, but being a christian, you are washed clean. I don’t remember chapter and verse, but in the old testament, God says, “though your sins be like scarlet, I will make them white as snow” We are washed by the blood and Jesus and that should make you feel GREAT! Take comfort, my friend, in the hope that Only comes from Christ!
