I received a letter in the mail this week requesting support for the many Catholics, injured etc. in need of pastoral care. It was from:

(Most Reverend) Timothy P. Broglio
Archdiocese for the Military Services

That’s incredible to hear. The letter does not state they are practicing Catholics just statistically Catholic.

I also know that there is a lot of proselytizing going on in there and ended up stumbling myself over it from lack of support and good catechesis.

For the last 150 years or more, American Catholics have statistically taken more battle casualties than any other group.

I had read a long time ago that Catholics are statistically more represented in the military than in the population at large, but I didn’t realize it was this high. Most Catholics are from the North. I have read that about 40% of all service members are Southerners. Most Southerners are not Catholic. Without northern Catholics and Southerners, there wouldn’t be a military worthy of the name.

Believe me, there are a lot of southern Catholics in the military – including your humble servant.

Is there a website to which we may support our “statistically Catholic” troops, as requested by Father Broglio?

I have a daughter who survived 9/11 at the Pentagon (Marines), a son-in-law who is a disabled vet following his involvement in the conflicts in Kosova (Marines), and a son-in-law currently on active duty in defense of our country (Air Force). I am very grateful for the support of our chaplains to our military men and women. They have consoled my children, annointed my sick, and baptized my grandbabies.

For which you are to be commended. However, since most Southerners are not Catholic (for now) my point was that two groups seem to constitute almost the entire U.S. armed forces. While both groups are worthy of esteem, it is not a very good commentary on the remainder of the population.

The Archdiocese for Military Services is well worthy of your support. Here is their website:
milarch.org/
They supply chaplains, sacraments, and religious services to our U.S. military personnel.

One of our local diocesan priests just joined the Army for the purpose of going into the chaplaincy program.

I am reminded of a session of “Law and Order” where a veteran was on trial and acquitted. The District Attorney commented, “The people who avoid active duty also avoid jury duty.”

Thank you much for this info.

Hope the military is making good use of sacramentals such as the Miraculous medal , Green Scapular , Bl.salt , Holy water, Bl .Rosary and ofcourse The Word itself - ’ Even though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death …’ and to be esp. intercessores for Church unity , for its fruit of peace from a world that believes …

While the donation site makes arrangements for monetary contributions, ( which ofcourse can be used to get the needed items) , wonder if more persons might be moved to donate such items as the above sacramentals , may be good C.D.s such as the Divine Mercy one and so forth , along with money, if such a provision is made !

May God bless them esp. to fulfill the role as ’ chosen race a royal nation , a holy priesthood ’ !

peace !

Look at this as an opportunity to evangelize your fellow Catholics and to reaffirm them in the one true faith.
