1 John 2:18 The end of the world?

I need help understanding this verse:

1 John 2:18

Children, it is the last hour; 9 and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour

From what I understand, it says here that the end is upon them, but it is not the end of the world yet.

There are two possible answers here.

1. The warning here is not that the END is coming soon but that we should be always prepared because God will fulfill every promise and as such if we are sleeping when the Master returns to gathers His own then we will have proven ourselves faithless servants.
2. If we have it view that every book of the New Testament was written before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, and there is reason to believe so, then the warning here could be taken as a warning to Jews that the Jewish Age is coming to an end and soon, which it was.
