This is true. In fact so much of the Christian faith can be perplexing that I rather doubt we could ever hope to understand much of it with certainty without the guidance of the HS given to the Church via an authority such as that of the magistereum.
hmm, I’m not sure that the magisterium is guided by the HS etc. is exempt from the uncertainty though. It seems like one among many positions.

Well, my point is that something like it should at least be necessary in order to have the capability of resolving doctrinal controversies, etc.

Meh, I don’t think that starting point is any less contentious than EO’s or Protestants, especially when u really dig into what the early Church believed: there are sooo many patristic scholars in the arena from different faiths, it’s hard to say the issues r black & white.
Well I would disagree with you as would the teachings of Catholicism. Matthew 16:18 is a predominant doctrine within the Catholic faith. With a mindset like yours, I doubt you will ever be sure of much regarding religion or spiritual matters.

Interesting that you agreed with the previous poster in disregarding the importance of Matthew 16:18 and then continue to state how we need authority in the Church. That’s exactly what Matthew 16:18 is addressing.

I guess it would be interesting except I can’t recall-or find-where I disagreed on the Catholic understanding of Matt 16:18

hmm, I’m not sure why you say that, but even if you’re right, I’d rather know little than unjustifiably believe much.
