I always thought the causer of death was Sin. Not God. I guess I am nutty that way.

Salaam Damascus;
👋 What are the “100 names for Allah”?

I am curious for an accurate list since the one I looked at does not include “Love” or “Father”. A curious thing really- since I can not imagine two better words to use on such a list if one decides a list is indeed needed at all.
Thank you, I am sure you can clear this up for me.
Allah (swt) has one proper name only, that is Allah. The 99 others “names” are mostly His Divine Attributes, but because they are all Absolutes, they are also used to refer to Him and we call Him by His Attributes.
If I say “powerful”, it could be anyone, but when I say “THE Powerful”, it refers automatically to Allah (SWT).
The Qur’an says: Say: “Call upon Allah, or call upon Ar-Rahman: by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names”. (Qur’an 017.110).
This LINK provides the 99 names with their English translation. As for Allah (SWT) and love, Look for Al Wadud, which is THE Loving One.

Thanks for your response Joseph.

I understand what you are saying Joseph, but I fail to see that the most beautiful names are in number - 99
I dont know who came up with picking these names, do you know?

Most of the names come directly from Quranic verses, the link I provided shows that; these specific names are the Absolutes Attributes of Allah (SWT), they are all preceded by the Arabic article Al , like Al-Qawi, The All-Powerful.

Since Allah (SWT) asked us to call Him by these names as well, it is only natural that people memorize them in order to call on Him by using the name which sweets the circumstance. For example, if I sinned, I will call on Al-Ghafur, The Forgiver; if I am in need, I will call on Al-Razzaq, The Provider etc.

Some names are exclusive to Allah (SWT), like Al-Khaliq, The Creator; some others can be used for human but in their Absolute senses they are solely for Allah (SWT). Like malik or king, but in its absolute sense it becomes Al-Malik, The King; also the term jalil, the English “majestic”, but the Al-Jalil (The Majestic) is solely for Allah (SWT).
Why 99 names? I honestly don’t know why such a number.

Salaam.
Joseph

Hi Joseph!

Well, you did answer my question. And honestly too. Thanks Joseph you are a refreshing change on this forum.

Sometimes the frustration I see here on the forums is simply not being able to get a straight answer to something. Then, naturally people think there is something being hidden or something.

THere is never a bad question, only a bad answer!

Take care Joseph. I’m sure I’ll have some more questions, hopefully you’ll be around to help out.

Peace!

Odd indeed.

Cant anyone read this and see that it is not based on reason or intelligent thought?

Or is reason contrary to Islam?
Nice house you have there. Is it made from single or double pane glass.

I am not saying their faith lacks reason. (not in this thread)

I am only speaking of this example.

I got an explaination from a friendly Muslim who even admits he does not understand the 99 factor.

Sorry you see contradictions here.

And since we are speaking of them, I’ll say double pane. One for the original covenant and one for the new covenant.

There are 99 names and Attributes of Allah(swt).
Thanks Sufi, Joseph answered that one. I guess there is only left the mystery of the 99… that is all. Maybe its a mystery that needs no explaination. After all, you should use the names off the list and not deviate from it. That is my understanding.
