On another forum I’ve been doing my best to defend our Catholic faith against allegations made by a virulent anti-Catholic. I feel I’ve done an adequate job so far, but I need help concerning the 15 promises of Mary with regard to the rosary. If you know of a site that would be helpful, I’d very much appreciate it-- as I would suggestions of others on this forum. The promises are below, followed by the allegations attacking the promises.

FIFTEEN PROMISES OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
TO CHRISTIANS WHO FAITHFULLY PRAY THE ROSARY
  1. To all those who shall pray my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and great graces.
  2. Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some special grace.
  3. The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin and dispel heresy.
  4. The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
  5. Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.
  6. Whoever recites my Rosary devoutly reflecting on the mysteries, shall never be overwhelmed by misfortune. He will not experience the anger of God nor will he perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will be converted; the just will persevere in grace and merit eternal life.
  7. Those truly devoted to my Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
  8. Those who are faithful to recite my Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces and will share in the merits of the blessed.
  9. I will deliver promptly from purgatory souls devoted to my Rosary.
  10. True children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in heaven.
  11. What you shall ask through my Rosary you shall obtain.
  12. To those who propagate my Rosary I promise aid in all their necessities.
  13. I have obtained from my Son that all the members of the Rosary Confraternity shall have as their intercessors, in life and in death, the entire celestial court.
  14. Those who recite my Rosary faithfully are my beloved children, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.
  15. Devotion to my Rosary is a special sign of predestination.

----All of the items are NOT biblical, they are not mentioned in Scriptures, and they are HERESY!
----Show me from Scriptures where Mary is given such power as to effect the salvation of man? (Point 5 above)
----Show me from Scriptures where saying the rosary saves anyone?* (point 4 and 5 above)
----Show me from Scriptures where saying the rosary protects anyone?* (points 1 and 2 above)
----Show me that such a heretical practice as praying to Mary dispels anyone from heresy?* (point 3 above)
----Shome me from Scriptures that salvation is merited, earned?* (point 6 above)
----Show me from Scriptures where we are told to pray the rosary, or even pray to Mary?
----Show me from Scriptures where Mary obtains anything from Jesus Christ for the benefit of man?
----Show me from Scriptures where it says that anyone saying the rosary is a child of Mary???* (point 14)
----Show me from Scriptures that the rosary predestines men to be saved?* (point 15)

----DOES ANYTHING WE DO save us?

or is it Jesus Christ who saves?* Are WE called Saviors?

What do the cross and resurrection mean to you?

The simple answer is that these are simply from a private revelation and are used for private devotion. They have no bearing on the teachings or beliefs of the Church except that they do not in any way oppose any Christian belief.

True, but unfortunately an anti-Catholic isn’t going to be impressed with a private revelation to a Catholic, especially a Marian devotee. And a lot of anti-Catholics insist (not necessarily “argue,” let alone coherently) that Catholic devotion to Mary does not in any way oppose Christian belief.

The Rosary itself is based on scripture, though of course anti-Catholics might have a problem with the second part of the Hail Mary. Dare them to try it for themselves, and see what happens. I say focus on the doctrine of the communion of saints, and the intercession of saints. If those are accepted, the interior door to the Rosary is open. Then they can try it, and see for themselves what the benefits are.

Of course, if they accept the doctine of the communion of saints, they might be a lot more open to accepting the notion of a private Marian revelation. (They cut themselves off from so much when they reject the Church! 😦 )

Ultimately, the Rosary is about Jesus. Although, now that I think about it, most of the Glorious Mysteries are about Mary also… :hmmm:

So let them start with the Joyful, Luminous, and Sorrowful Mysteries first. Oops, the Luminous Mysteries were promulgated (is that the correct word?) by the Pope. He’s Catholic. :hmmm:

So they can start with the Joyful and Sorrowful Mysteries – the beginning and end of the earthly life of Christ. They can do it in 35 minutes. 👍

Try another approach.
Ask them to prove that anything has to be confirmed by the sacred scriptures.
Ask them if everything Jesus said or did is recorded in the bible.
Did Jesus give us a book to get our religion from, or did he leave us a living scripture- the Church.
The deposit of faith is made up of the Bible and Tradition. The bible is plain here. Many of Christs teachings are not in the bible. At least clearly.
Put the onus on them for a change. Good luck.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif
Try the link below. And at the bottom after the history of the rosary you can download a greaat book free. The secret of the Rosary by St Louis De Montfort. Perhaps this will help too.

  1. Point out that scripture itself says that not everything was written down and therefore some turths are not found in scripture.
  2. The Rosary is one of those truths bot wriiten down and therefore not found in scripture.

Thank you, all of you, for your help— I’m a novice in answering allegations made against Catholicism, so I do need to depend on others who have a great deal more exerience than I and who not only know their Catholic faith well, but clearly know how to effectively defend it. Following this and other threads here convinces me of that.

Sean, I get the same error messages as Scullinius when I try to access the sites you provided.

And as for Mary ever obtaining anything from Jesus for the good of man, what about the wedding at Cana? Didn’t Mary ask Jesus to make more wine? If he hadn’t wouldn’t the host have been deadfully embaressed? I’d say that is Mary obtaining something from Jesus for the good of a man AND it comes from the scripture, which this person seems overly set on.

Hi, Sean,
That fixed it. I just took a quick glance at the first one and it looks good! I’'m going back there now to read the material carefully,
Thanks!!

Absolutely. I’ll use this for sure. And you’re right…nothing but Scripture will do for this person. And nothing but Scripture as he interprets it. Thank you!
