1956 St. joseph daily missal any good?

Hey everyone!!!

I dont know if this is the place to post this so please leave it here moderators!!

today at a garage sale i found a Daily Missal to my surprise. It turns out that the Missal is a Daily Missal from 1956 with the Imprimatur from Cardinal Spellman. It obviously has the EF, for daily Mass. I purchased it for 50 cents, and another marian prayerbook. However, how would i use a Misaal like this, as unfortunatley, being a student in high school, and not having an EF MASS in proximity, it wouldnt be of much use as a Missal. However if i were to go to a EF Mass, would it be good for usage?? also, can i use it for private prayer? and if so, how would i use it? medidate on the readings and parts of the MASS? it is a wonderful Missal, although i dont know if it is much good, and i need your help!! Feeedback requested! (also, iinstead of reading Scripture, which i have a hard time doing on a consistent Basis, could i use the Missal as it would have Scripture in it?? i need help on this one too!!) THANK YOU EVERYONE for your much needed help!!
 
Keep it. 50 cents is nothing, but those missals are great. I have 3 stashed away in case a EF Mass comes to town. Take it to your prayer time and read over it. Learn the prayers of the Mass and how to navigate it so that when you get the chance to go to a EF Mass, you are familiar with navigating the missal.

I would watch these two videos and pray along with them in your missal:

Feast of the Sacred Heart

Last Sunday After Penetecost

You should set your tassels first:

First tassel at the Feast of the Sacred Heart propers (The third Friday after Pentecost) or the Last Sunday After Pentecost propers (note, most of the propers are in English only, but you’ll figure it out).

Second tassel at the beginning of the Ordinary of the Mass.

Start the video and do your best to pray. Some of the parts the priest will say silently. Other parts, the priest will be saying his prayers quietly while the choir sings the same thing slowly. Also, such as with the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, the priest may be praying these prayers while the choir sings the Introit. The priest will catch up on his own.

Just pray along and enjoy learning. This is the form of Mass that nourished 1500 years of Catholics.
 
I have one of those too. Is yours in good condition? Mine is falling apart. I would like to get it restored but I don’t know where I can go to do that.
 
the inside cover is coming apart (nothing some tape or glue cant fix), but i want to know if its still good for use at EF Masses?

@nymamamary–The Tridentine Mass was said in 1956. So yes, it will “work” at an EF Mass nowadays. By EF I mean a Tridentine Mass, not an Ordinary Form in Latin.

Don’t get too hung up on it, though. Most churches offering the Tridentine Mass have EF missalettes. There isn’t too much to the people’s responses, especially in a sung Mass (High Mass, or Missa Cantata.)

You have a small pearl at a more-than-bargain price. That certainly is good for use at assisting at the Traditional Latin Mass. It is a good practice to read the prayers everyday, or at least as much is possible for you. You will be linked to many feasts which go back centuries and will learn more about the saints in the process.
Read the Ordinary(prayers said at every Mass(for the most part(Prayers at the foot of the altar, gloria, beautiful Offetory prayers, ancient Canon and all the prayers that go with it). Also, the Last Gospel telling us of how Our Lord took flesh and dwelt among us.
The prayers before and after HC are also beautiful. Also, the different ceremonies and special happenings during the year9Candlemas, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, etc) are covered.
Do familiarise it the best you can. Pray one day you will get to use it at Mass.
When I first assisting at the TLM in the mid-90’s, I used the St Joseph’s Missal that I had bought a while before at a church flea market for short money. It served me well and is one of the easier ones to use, in my opinion. I later moved up to a Fr Lasance Missal which has all the Propers in Latin. But this should serve you well.
The "missalettes’ that the previous poster is speaking about are very good(Ecclesia Dei Red covers are popular), but what you have is better, especially since it is full of all the feasts and other features. God bless.

It will serve you well if you assist at an EF Mass. I regularly use a 1954 missal, myself. In 1962 the holy father added Saint Joseph’s name to the Roman Canon (Eucharistic prayer) and omitted the second confiteor before Holy Communion. Otherwise, it’s no different from the 1962 missal in any big way.
 
Rich C is right. I have collected a small stack of pre- 1962 missals. I just add St. Joseph as has been mentioned. I have noticed that many of the EF Masses still have the second confiteor prior to communion and some do not. Personally I like it. 🙂

Most any good bookstore should be able to recommend a bindery company to restore your old missal.

I have had several bibles rebound in leather at Norris Bookbinding Co. Phone number is 888-213-2586. They are very nice and I highly recommend them.
They are in Mississippi

I have the same missal and I have used it at the Latin Mass.

It is fine to use at Extraordinary Form Masses. The changes that were made between it and the 62 Missal are very minor. many people use the St. Josephs from years before 62.

Same here, I just penciled in the Latin on the left-hand page and the English on the right. I’ve send people with very old missals (probably 30s vintage) in front of me at Mass, that have similar notations here and there.

It was a very stable missal, overall.

I found one in Houston. How much did it cost for you? I have a small missal and a big family Bible.

I covered a big family bible and if memory serves it was around $125.00/140.00 It is leather and NOT bonded leather and they include a ribbon.

I had my JB rebound in leather and it was around $100.00 They do charge you shipping. My JB bible fin the PO box-- if it fits it ships.

I was very pleased with the out come. They have a site. They also put gold lettering some included in the price. Check out their site. They are family owned and very nice to talk to.
Good luck. They can give you some prices of the phone.
 
The missal also has some very good prayers in it for just praying at home. Also I know my old missal has a very nice examination of conscience so I always bring it when I go to confession yours might as well.
 
GOOD??? an understatment. Hang onto that missal!!! I have one myself, as well as a Saint Andrews Daily Missal from 1945, (re-printeed in 1999 by St. Bonaventure Publications, unfortunatly again out of print, ) and “The New Missal for Everyday” with a 1915 Impramature. The pre-1962 missals are gems of Catholic doctrine, devotion, and history, cherish yours and use it in your private devotions as well as at the EF mass!!!
