1962 Missal (Neumann Press)

Hello all,

Just a quick question regarding the Missal. As the thread title states, I have the 1962 Roman Missal published by the Neumann Press. I had a question on it’s use.

Is this Missal to be used at a Tridentine Mass or can it be used at an ordinary form Mass (in Latin of course)?

I’m confused because I brought it to the Latin OF last weekend and was lost essentially the whole time, but I realized that perhaps it’s meant to be used at a Tridentine Mass. Is that the case?

On a separate note, what’s the difference between a Tridentine Mass and the OF (in Latin)? :o

I have this exact missal and love it!

It’s for the Tridentine Mass. It’s a re-print of a 1954 missal, and the Tridentine Mass was slightly modified in 1955 and 1962, so it’s a little out of date even for use at a Tridentine Mass (but except for Holy Week, St. Joseph’s name appearing in the Canon, and the supression of the 2nd Confiteor I’ve found no difference myself and use it anyway).

It is not however, of any real use at the Ordinary Form of the Mass.

See, the EF and OF are different even when compared in Latin, because most of the prayers and rubrics were changed. The OF isn’t simple a translation of the Tridentine Mass, far from it.

The MTF Daily Missal (for the Ordinary Form) has the Ordinary of the Mass in both Latin and English. You might want to get a copy of that.
 
I would add one thing to Rich C’s reply.

I think such a missal is very useful at an OF mass! Just not for following along directly.

But the OF mass isn’t so hard to follow along with without the missal. I’ve used a TLM hand missal while in an OF just to use for prayers before Mass, before Communion, after Communion, and so on.
 
Funny you should say that NYC, because I have to attend an OF Mass with my family this weekend and I was going to bring my Neumann Press missal just to keep up with the readings, but not to take to Mass itself.

This 3rd edition English translation is going to trip me up; I haven’t even said the new Gloria yet.

LOL … I was recently at an OF (I was actually in the confession line but Mass was being celebrated) and the priest said “the Lord be with you.”

And though I’ve said “et cum spiritu tuo” or chanted it so many times, I still thought “and also with you” just by ingrained habit.

Last time I attended a Maronite liturgy, though much of it is in Arabic or Syriac, they responded “and also with you” and used the old English Creed. It’s used outside the Mass a lot as well.

“The Lord be with you” is too ingrained as well. It is “The Lord IS with you” in the Hail Mary.
