I just got my first 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal yesterday. I am going to begin attending daily mass, but looking though the missal, I have no idea where to start.

1.) Where are the daily scripture readings in the missal?

2.) Some of the Sunday readings do not match up with readings I’ve found on calendars for this liturgical season.

3.) 1st and 2nd readings?

Basically, I purchased the missal to follow the readings and gospels at daily mass, however, don’t really know where to start.

Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

  1. There are not readings for every day in the liturgical year, as you are used to, e.g. Wednesday in Week 30, or whatever. However, you will find the readings by first checking the Proper of Seasons (in case today is, say, Ember Wednesday or whatever), and then afterwards check the actual date, e.g. November 21st in the Proper of Saints.
  2. Can you cite examples? - I’m not sure what you mean.
  3. There is only one reading, the Epistle. Then you have the gradual, which has Psalm-ish material, then the Gospel.

Thank you for the reply. As I said, I just got the Missal yesterday, and am working my way to understanding how to follow it.

I guess my main question is, if I were to go to church tomorrow, and I follow the Proper of Saints for tomorrow, which is The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (p.1511) there is only the Collect, no gospel or Epistle. Where would I find the Epistle and Gospel for tomorrow’s mass?

I believe that any Missal will be a bit overwhelming until you get the hang of it. But, with a little bit of use it will become much easier.

First thing is first. The 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal is intended to be used with the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, also know as the Tridentine Mass, or the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). It will do you very little good if you are attending daily Mass in the Ordinary Form, also know as the Novus Ordo Mass. If you do attend the Novus Ordo Mass then I can recommend a good Missal for that.

But, assuming that it is daily Mass in the Extraordinary Form that you are attending then you will need to know a little bit about how the daily Mass readings work in the TLM. It is different than the way it works in the Novus Ordo Mass.

In the Novus Ordo Mass there is a 3 yr cycle of Sunday readings (called years A, B, and C) . And for weekdays there is a 2 yr cycle (called years I and II). There are 2 readings, a psalm, and the Gospel on Sundays. On weekdays there is typically one reading, the psalm, and the Gospel. There are also readings for particular Feast days that can optionally be used instead of the daily readings. It is my experience that most priests will use the daily reading as opposed to the readings for the Feast (if there is a Feast that day) but they will mention the Saint in the Homily.

But it works a bit different for the Tridentine Mass. For Sundays there is a 1 yr cycle of readings. It repeats every year. And typically there is 1 reading (usually from the New Tesatmant), a psalm, and the Gospel.

Weekdays have no cycle of readings in the TLM. The readings that are used depend on the Saint of the day. For example, today (November 20th) is the Feast of St. Felix of Valois (see page 1511 in your Missal). It says to use the Mass of a Confessor Not a Bishop (page 987 in your Missal) with the exception of one prayer - the Collect provided on pg. 1511.

So, the readings for today would be 1 Cor 4:9-14, Psalm 36:30-31, Psalm 111:1, and Luke 12:32-34.

Tomorrow (Nov 21st) will be the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (see page 1511-1512 in your Missal). It says to use the Mass on pg 1026 again with the exception of one prayer.

On a day where there is no Feast day (I believe the next one is November 27th) then there are a few possibilities. First, the priest can say the Mass of the preceding Sunday (using all of those prayers and readings again). Second, he can use one of the provided Votive Masses (see pages 1544-1596 for some of them). And third he can celebrate the Mass of any Saint as a votive Mass and use those readings. If your priest has a particular favorite Saint he could do this. Or if there is a Saint whose Feast day has recently fallen on a Sunday and therefore was trumped by the Sunday Mass then it is possible to honor that Saint on another day.

I think therein lies my problem. I will be attending Daily Mass in the Ordinary Form.

What Missal do you recommend for that?

I wish I did a little more research before buying!

Let me clarify.

I will be attending mass with two readings, a response, and a gospel.

By reading your post, to me, this is an Ordinary Mass with the schedules you mentioned.

Forgive me for not knowing more, I’m trying to learn!

You must have the Missal published by Angelus press ?

For the Novus Ordo Mass, you need the St Joseph Weekday Missal, or one similar. Vol 1 of the St Joseph covers Advent to Pentecost, so that is the one you’ll need beginning Dec 2nd this year.

I believe there are some changes pending that will result in a new edition of these Missals, so you may want to wait before purchasing a Missal for the NO Mass.

If I’m wrong about this, I’m sure someone here will correct me.

At any rate, welcome home 🙂

I have that one, and it is well worth it!
I was actually thinking about asking my dad for it for Christmas and keeping my Magnificat subscription so DH could use it since its a bit easier to follow than the missalette used at my parish(he’s not Catholic…yet…but I’m working on it…with the Blessed Mother’s and St. Monica’s help!!)

How did you arrive at that conclusion? Why not throw a little schism trash talk while you’re at it? The OP has a legitimate missal question, wants to follow the Mass in the best possible way, and he gets this.

Gee Bob, carterml03 mentioned in a post above mine that on pg 1511 of the Missal was The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I picked up my Angelus Missal, which I love btw, and on pg 1511, there it was. The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Am I missing something here ? Please shoot me a pm and tell me what’s wrong Bob. 🤷

So is it easy to follow along with the readings at daily masses as well as Sunday masses of Ordinary mass?
I would say yes… though the Bible translation is not the one we use in Scotland, so I don’t actually use it. It’s well worth it for the hundreds of pages of devotional material alone!

That’s good. I have one too. But do realize this Missal has been the center of a lot of controversy on this forum. I didn’t want the OP feel he did something wrong.
