What would it be to understand an emotion? Well, consider: emotion is a type of affect. You cannot have discursive knowledge of emotions, and thereby understand them. You have to know what they’re like. This an experiential reality.Jesus was not only God but man. As a human, He had emotion but not as God. Emotion requires a human body. As for the definition, just because you can understand another feelings does not mean you experience them. It does not mean you have emotion.
In the Incarnation – which is an eternal reality, not an event in time – God knows what it’s like to experience like we do. God made himself vulnerable to us, and vulnerable like us.
The way you talk about Jesus, it sounds like He is God trapped inside a man’s body. Otherwise, how could God not be experiencing emotion at the exact moment that man-Jesus is experiencing emotion? This idea reminds me of Nestorianism, which is a heresy.
