2 Timothy 4:14 - Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

This coppersmith is not a believer–never was and never is to be. Why would the Lord give salvation to this non-believer by his works? Or does this mean due to the lack of his works he will not receive salvation? — I’m confused.

St. Paul’s just saying that he is going to be held accountable for his evil deeds. If he repents and comes to Christ, he’ll be saved. If he doesn’t, he’ll be punished for these deeds.

The basic point is that St. Paul is, instead of getting angry and choosing to take revenge on him like some might, simply turning the fellow over to God and taking no concern with it himself. He’s not going to fume over it, he’s going to move on and leave it to God to do any punishing that is necessary (if that turns out to be the case).

From the Haydock Commentary: “Ver. 14. The Lord will render [8] to him. We read shall render, not only in the Latin and Syriac, but also in divers Greek manuscripts which Dr. Wells again prefers before the ordinary Greek copies, in which we read, The Lord render or reward him, as in the Protestant translation. If that was the true reading, we must take the words by way of a prophecy, and not as an imprecation or curse. (Witham)”

From John Wesley’s commentary: “2Ti 4:14 - The Lord will reward him - This he spoke prophetically.”

From Matthew Henry’s commentary: He mentions Alexander, and the mischief that he had done him, 2Ti_4:14, 2Ti_4:15. This is he who is spoken of Act_19:33. Paul foretels that God would reckon with him. It is a prophetical denunciation of the just judgment of God that would befall him: The Lord will reward him according to his works."

2Ti 4:14 -
Alexander: Act_19:33, Act_19:34; 1Ti_1:20
