2012 - Read the Bible!

With a new year almost upon us, I’d like to invite you all to read the Catholic Bible in a year.

I’ve followed this plan for two years now, and have seen something different each time. I loved reading the Old Testament in order, beginning-to-end, because it put some things in context for me that I didn’t really “get” before.

Here is the plan that I follow. You can start it any time of the year, but I know people often like to start fresh with a new year.

Well, I plan on finishing the deuterocanonical books the end of 2012, but not the whole Bible.

I had done this many years ago with one of the 1 year Bibles. Very good discipline and quite a goal to finish.

Most of the one year Bibles are protestant, so make sure you get a Catholic one or you will be missing 7 books of the bible.

But don’t be discouraged if you can’t keep with it. If you read the daily readings of the church you will have read most of the Bible in 2 years. The Daily mass readings are in a two year cycle and the weekend Mass readings are in a 3 year cycle. We actually read more of the Bible than we think.

Intentionally reading all of the bible in one year is great, thanks for the website.

If you can get a hold of Jeff Cavins bible timeline, you can read the books that will give you a good historical road map of the Bible. At this link there is a Leaders guide PDF that you can open that will give you a general idea of what the books are. This may be good for a first shot to avoid being bogged down in certain books.

At a nearby parish I have done the Acts module and we are currently doing Matthew. I missed the timeline, but I think they are planning on doing it again next Fall. Well worth it if you can find a local parish doing one of these studies.

My goal for 2012 and probably 2013 is to read the whole bible. It’s a feet in its self, but it’ll be a enjoyable and rewarding experience. But I don’t know of a really good Catholic version of the bible to use.

Only 13.5% of the Old Testament (excluding Psalms) and 71.5% of the New Testament appear in the Lectionary.
