Thursday night will mark the end of a pretty awful year. There weren’t any wars for a change, leaving Israel free to deal with itself. There are times when launching a decent war, as Israel knows and loves, seems to be the best thing to do. Dealing with itself does Israel no good. When it cannot hide behind the routine “unavoidable war,” all its wounds and scars are revealed.
According to the 2015 Democracy Index, published by the Israel Democracy Institute last month, Israelis have it good. That was the response of some three-quarters of them, up from the 66 percent who were happy in 2014.
What improved this year? Supermodel Bar Refaeli got married (and arrested); musician Ninet Tayeb (and news presenter Yonit Levi) had babies. Eighty percent of Israelis believe that the state of the nation is good, or at least so-so. Eighty-eight percent of the Jews feel that they belong.
But look what happened to the Arabs: Only 32 percent feel an affinity with the state, compared to 59 percent the previous year – the most dramatic and worrisome drop of the year. But who’s counting and who even cares?
What’s important is that 86 percent of the Jews say they are Zionists, 61 percent support a declaration of loyalty as a condition for the right to vote, 60 percent (more young people than older ones) believe the state should be allowed to monitor citizens’ Internet use and a majority believes that human rights organizations are pests.
According to numerology it was a special year – 67 years since the founding of the state in ‘48 and 48 years of occupation that began in ‘67. There are still many who ask, will it last another 50 years? Will the occupation last another 50? There is no other country in which such questions are asked.
Twenty-four Israelis and 128 Palestinians have been killed so far in the current mini-intifada. The demographic balance is preserved; more than five times more Palestinians have been killed than Jews, though it is a significant decrease from previous successes. One hundred Palestinians killed for every Israeli in Operation Cast Lead and 37 for every Israeli in Operation Protective Edge. But never before has an official order to kill been issued, as happened this year.
It was a year in which there wasn’t even a semblance of peace talks or a diplomatic process, but that’s probably a good thing; enough with the charade. It was also the year in which the United States gave Israel carte blanche to act as it wished, perhaps more than any other year. The most turbulent demonstrations were by those of Ethiopian origin, with the parents of “sardines” (children in crowded classrooms) also making their voices heard. That was the upper limit of protest in Israel.
The election in March led to the most right-wing government in history and the most nationalist Knesset ever, which is legislating accordingly. It was a year in which all shame was lost, One no longer has to explain why left-wing organizations must be ultra-transparent while right-wing groups are exempt, or why, at a time when only the right is violent, it’s the left that’s traitorous.
It was the year that heralded the start of blatant and unapologetic Israeli fascism. One could not say that before. But a year after Operation Protective Edge, a year in which citizens feared to protest, the fruit ripened. The battle for the regime was abandoned without a fight. It is still in full swing, but the results are in; there is no one left to stop the downward slide.
Israelis were preoccupied with lots of things this year, from Sara Netanyahu’s bottle deposits to the suicide of senior police commander Ephraim Bracha. Of the 30 most-read stories on Haaretz’s Hebrew website, not a single one had to do with the occupation or the cracks in Israeli democracy, other than a recent, sweet story about the little Jewish boy who insulted an Arab rider on a bus (“Do you have a knife?”) and ended up hugging her in a true Hollywood happy ending.
A nice end to a bad year. The next one looks to be even worse.

Vatican Accord Recognizing De Facto Palestinian State Takes Effect
The Vatican says its first treaty with Palestinians has come into force, more than two years after the Roman Catholic Church drew criticism from Israel for recognizing the existence of a Palestinian state.
The accord, which technically covers church operations in parts of the Holy Land under Palestinian control, was signed in June 2015. It also reaffirms support for a negotiated two-state solution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
A statement Saturday said the Holy See and what it recognizes as the state of Palestine had notified each other that all necessary procedural steps were completed and that the treaty was in effect.
More than 130 other nations have also recognized a Palestinian state, backing a 2012 U.N. General Assembly resolution that recognizes it as an observer, nonmember state.
Israel and the United States oppose such recognition, with Israel calling the pact premature and counterproductive.
Both governments have insisted that the only way to end the deadly conflict is through negotiations, which have not progressed in years.voanews.com/content/vatican-accord-recognizing-palestinian-state-takes-effect/3128716.html

Fascist???

Israeli citizens, including Arabs, have the right to vote, and do.

Arabs are in the Israeli parliament and are officers in the armed forces. How many Jews are in the parliament of Saudi Arabia? How many Jewish army officers are there in Iran?

In Israel, Jews, Druze and Circassians are all subject to the military draft. Arab Muslims and Christians can join the army if they want, but are exempt from conscription.

The only place in the Middle East where Christian Arab numbers are growing is Israel.

Other than the oil states, Arabs in Israel have the highest standard of living anywhere in the Middle East.

The only security in the West Bank is provided by Israel, which also guards the government there.

Hamas is a terrorist organization that rules Gaza and, but for Israel, would rule the West Bank as well. If one wants to find some real fascist rulers, one only needs to look to Gaza.

There is no exodus of Arabs from Israel. Why not? Because they have it better there than anywhere else they could go.

Handing the West Bank over to “Palestinian” rule would be handing it to Hamas.

Thousands of west Bank Palestinians gain their livelihood daily by working in Israel.

Israel is no fascist state. It is, however, a beleaguered state surrounded by fascist enemies. There is no blame in Israelis defending themselves.

One third of the population of the West Bank is Jewish. What is the reason why they should be driven out or killed by a fascist, racist organization like Hamas?

I don’t know I just study this question.
I’m watching/following the social networks of pro-Palestinian groups and movements, and read the news.I read them in order to compare with Israeli media

“You are not forgotten” is the theme of the final statement of the Holy Land Coordination 2016, which took place on 6-14 January with visits to Gaza, Beit Jala and Jordan. Fr. Paul Lansu, Pax Christi International policy advisor, attended the pilgrimage and gave also an interview with Vatican Radio.

I find it amusing that many American Jews will support very left wing policies in America, yet become right wingers when Israel is concerned.

Nonetheless, Israel does support and finance causes that most enlightened people should find repugnant. There is no separation of church and state; the Haredi controlled Chief Rabbinate has shut out Modern Orthodox rabbis, as well as Reform and Conservative, from conversion and marriage (this system is rooted in Ottoman era European-inspired state religion), and such a system lends itself to misogyny and homophobia, of course (there have been murders of gays at the hands of Orthodox Jews). Then you have Religious Zionism in its more right wing forms, which is the inspiring ideology of the settlements, as well as much of Modern Orthodoxy in America. This ideology has lent itself to the Price Tag attacks on leftist Jews, Christians, and Muslims.People such as Tzipi Hotovely, Dov Shurin, Ayelet Shaked, and others put American neo-nazis to shame. Songs calling for God to exact revenge upon Palestinians are sung at weddings. Hate crimes against immigrants are commonplace.

Yet the irony is that American Jews will condemn people like Donald Trump, while opposing African immigration to Israel. Amazing. Or pro choice politicians like Sen. Schumer support Israeli pro life organizations like Efrat. Mind-boggling.

My relatives Protestants dream to get into Israel at least once in their lives.
One of them was there for a Pastors conference.
For him, it was something big.
For my Pentecostal relative, Israel certainly associated with biblical Israel.
They preach about the re-building the temple, the Levites servants, as something inevitable and very soon.
In seminary, I read a Protestant author writing on the topic of eschatology which is contrary suggests that the biblical Whore of Babylon is Israel, just because some places there are terribly corrupted by immorality.
On the other hand I watch video fragments about very religious people who are constantly praying and wait the Messiah.
Some say that Israel is a theocracy, some say that many young people reject the Zionist theories and want to live in modern style.
So all the same - what is Israel ? and what is the future of this state?
Can you suggest what the future of this state?

Many evangelicals are bible literalists who support a position of Premillenial Dispensationalism. There’s not anything you can do to change their mind about this issue.
