20th Century Female Martyrs

Hey guys,

I write a “Saint of the Week” article for hubpages.com where I try and find interesting Saints and Blesseds to write about (meaning famous people who nobody realizes are Saints, little known Saints, or Saints with interesting lives).

But as of yet I have done no martyrs and only one female Saint, Saint Eve (marcanthony.hubpages.com/hub/Saints-Adam-and-Ev). And I’ve done no 20th century Saints.

So does anybody know of a Latin female Saint or martyr who’s NOT Saint Edith Stein or NOT Saint Maria Goretti? I’d rather not do them because 1) They’re very well known and I’d rather do little known Saints unless I have what I deem a good reason for doing otherwise, and 2) Saint Edith Stein’s story and Saint Maria Goretti’s story don’t seem interesting enough to me.

I am doubting neither of their personal holiness, but Saint Maria Goretti only lived to be ten years old and I’m trying to write about the entire life of a Saint and though Saint Edith Stein was martyred in Auschwitz we know little of her actual martyrdom (as opposed to, say, Saint Maximilian Kolbe).

So does anybody know of any other 20th century female Latin Martyr Saints?

What about the Italian saint, Saint Gemma? She was not a martyr but a doctor who refused chemo treatment so her baby could live. Unfortunately, I forgot her last name but the baby she saved (female) is also a doctor. She’s not a martyr though but an inspiration for other women.

I’m sure too that among the Mexican martyrs that were beatified recently, there probably are some nuns among them.

You might also consider Blessed Jacinta from Fatima—not a martyr either but she suffered tremendously for sinners, especially when she was dying.

Even though St, Maria Goretti was only 10 don’t bet on a lot of adolescents knowing her story either.

St. Edith Stein I believe was killed in the gas chambers, maybe no details on that but interesting because first she was an atheist, a Jew and then converted into the Catholic faith but was martyred because the Nazi’s still considered her a Jew.

Look up some old English women saints, during the dark ages the English kingdoms produced more saints than the rest of northern Europe put together.(vikings make a lot of martyrs).

I’m interested, but when I looked her up I found nobody fitting her description. Perhaps you are referring to Saint Gianna Beretta Molla? I’d absolutely consider her except that EVERYBODY on CAF seems to know her.

Alexandrina Maria da Costa is quite popular with some people.

I personally don’t have a devotion to her, but some of the young people I work with seem quite keen on her.

She’s not a martyr but was paralysed trying to escape rape and suffered a lot for the faith.

A martyr of sorts (she died young due to the stresses of her mission work)I was Bl. Edel Quinn, one of the early members of the Legion of Mary, and the woman who introduced the Legion to Africa.

There are also many martyrs of China, although I can’t think of any names off hand, and many Eastern Catholic martyrs of the 20th century in Romania and the Middle East.

This is a tough one! I only came up with two female martyr saints; Maria Goretti and Edith Stein. If youre open to Orthodox Saints the field is a bit broader - all the daughters of Nicholas II were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, (outside Russia, of course.).
