I am not sure where LifeNews is getting its information that Sam Schmid was scheduled to have his organs donated within hours. ABC News, which seems in part the source of LifeNews’ information, says that doctors were puzzled by his condition and delayed taking action after the surgery.
For days Schmid didn’t seem to be responding, but what puzzled his doctor was that he did not see fatal injuries on the MRI scan. So he decided to keep Schmid on life support longer.
“There was plenty wrong – he had a hemorrhage, an aneurysm and a stroke from the part of the aneurysm,” Spetzler said. “But he didn’t have a blood clot in the most vital part of his brain, which we know he can’t recover from. And he didn’t have a massive stroke that would predict no chance of a useful existence.”
So while the family was given a realistic picture of Schmid’s poor chances for survival, Spetzler ordered one more MRI to see if the critical areas of the brain had turned dark, indicating brain death.
“If not, we would hang on and keep him on support,” he said. “But I didn’t want to give the family false hope.”

The mother is quoted as saying that no one talked to her about organ donation, although she thinks they hinted at the possibility so she could consider it.

Thanks for taking the time to check the facts. It certainly seems a miracle regardless of errors in the story, just in time for Christmas!

I just read the ABC news report as well. It does appear that even his doctors consider his recovery to be miraculous, however, as you say, they were NOT preparing to harvest his organs just yet. The ABC story indicates that they were hours away from trying to decide whether to continue life support. Thanks be to God that the one doctor had a “hunch” and paid attention to his intuition.

This is not the first time LifeNews has said something questionable. It’s really a shame. If they prove themselves factually unreliable they run the risk of doing more harm than good for the pro-life movement.

Absolutely. This is a Christmas miracle which should bring cheer to all.

I was concerned, too, when I read this story. Note that it says that he awoke before doctors “killed” him. My question is, if the young man was on life support, what kind? If he was on extraordinary measures, would removing life support be “killing” him? I think I need more info.

One thing that we can’t do, in our zeal for life, is to compromise the truth.

They actually do it all the time. THey’ll have some article heading that concludes one thing, but then the article itself implies another - or the facts aren’t all correctly aligned.
