From First Things (Nov 05):

Study Finds 29-Week Fetuses Probably Feel No Pain and Need No Abortion Anesthesia,” or so the New York Times announced, in a headline based on an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which is admittedly based on no new research but offers the opinions of doctors who, it is said, have reviewed the pertinent literature. One of the article’s co-authors runs an abortion clinic and another, David Grimes, is vice president of the pro-abortion organization Family Health International and has personally performed over ten thousand abortions, of which 10 to 20 percent were later than the first trimester. One notes that neonatologists who treat premature babies as young as twenty-three or twenty-four weeks have long observed their patients reacting to painful procedures by crying and jerking away, and they routinely administer anesthesia during surgery. For the New York Times and other pro-abortion publications, denying fetal pain is an important tactic in denying the humanity of these little people. To that end, we are asked to believe that they feel pain in surgery but not when they are being chopped to death. To believe this requires an ideological conditioning of the mind to which most people, fortunately, are strongly resistant.

Even if it could be proven that a fetus feels no pain, it is a moot point.

The lack of pain does not justify the taking of a human life. If it did, it would only be necessary to render a person unconscious before murdering him.

The fact that pro-abortion folk have to resort to tactics like this proves how weak their position is.

Christopher Reeve probably couldn’t feel much pain after his accident. Should we have offed him? I mean he probably had some organs healthier people could have used to improve their quality of life. How selfish of him, thinking he had a right to those undignified years in a wheelchair.
Anyways, doctors have delivered premies at that many weeks and verify they do in fact feel pain. This study was conducted by at least one abortion activist anyway.

Baloney. They have all the “wiring” necessary to feel pain; they respond as if they feel pain; if this is not enough to prove a 29 week old fetus/preemie feels pain, than nothing is. It’s the only proof we can get, since we can’t ask them. (And for that matter, even if we could, they might be lying. ) This makes me so mad.
Not only do they slaughter the innocent, they can’t even be bothered to do it humanely…cattle are treated better than human beings.

I honestly don’t care if they feel pain or not. It still doesn’t make murdering them right! That’s like saying that as long as you drug up your victim before you murder them, it’s morally right and that is* totally* wrong!

Holly hit the nail right on the head.

Not being able to feel pain doesn’t make someone not human.

Just another attmpt by the pro-abortionists to play God.

No, it doesn’t make it right. However, assuming someone doesn’t feel pain when in reality, they very well may, is also wrong. They used to (and in some cases still do) do surgery on babies without any type of anesthesia because they supposedly didn’t feel pain. I say, if there is any possibility a creature may be able to feel pain, we should act on the assumption they do. This is, of course, a separate issue from killing, which is wrong regardless.

This is just one of the silliest Pro-Abortion arguments I have heard from the Culture of Death. I just can’t stop laughing at the Pro-Aborts. First, they defend killing babies which are three quarters born and now they try to defend killing babies in the mothers womb and claim its justified because they think the baby cannot feel pain – The Pro-Abort mentality just keeps me laughing uncontrollably.

So I guess the Pro-Aborts must also think its OK to kill any human being who is “paralyzed” because they cannot feel pain!!!

HA HA HA HA! The laughing just won’t stop!

You know, I saw a girl on Oprah who actually couldn’t feel any pain. She poked her eyes out as a baby. She could have broken bones, and no one could know for a long time. I think she had a broken jaw once for two months before they found out. She just has no way of knowing when to stop or anything, because she can’t feel it. But you know what? I think her family would shudder to read this article, because no matter what, they surely love that little girl and go to great lengths to protect her from harm. Feeling or not feeling pain does not define a human being. This just reinforces how hard we, as pro-lifers, must fight to protect all human life.
The sad thing is how many rabid anti-lifers will latch onto this as pure truth and debunk the actual research (not opinion) that proves just the opposite.
