2nd Anniversary of Summorum Pontificum Implementation

Today the Church observes the second anniversary of the publishing of Summorum Pontificum, the long-awaited motu proprio of Pope Benedict XVI replacing all former “indults” and freeing the Mass of All Times, the Traditional Latin Mass. No longer would a priest have to ask permission of his bishop to say the Mass as the Mass is to be readily offered and available to all of the Faithful.

I wrote a lengthy reflection on the effect of Summorum Pontificum in light of Archbishop Lefebvre, Pope Benedict XVI, and various priests and bishops. That article was published by me on July 7, 2009.

The Society of St. Pius X would have still existed in full communion with Rome had Archbishop Lefebvre not illicitly ordained bishops and not condemned the infallible teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the Novus Ordo mass. Lefebvre decided to embrace the manifest grave sins of Schism, disobedience to authority, and public scandal. How can that be considered “saintly”? Furthermore, the Tridentine Latin Mass would have still been celebrated since many of the faithful craved for it, so the bishops and the Pope would permit its celebration. I do not think scoring points and trying to rationalize schism is helpful to the good cause of widening the use of the Tridentine mass. I also do not think that Pope St. Pius V prohibited the possibility of future minor legitimate changes to the mass by the Pope and the Bishops collectively. It would’ve been hypocritical of him to do so since he himself changed the mass and it would’ve been exactly like prohibiting himself from doing so had he had felt the need later on.

Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications against the living bishops; he did not declare that they were “not excommunicated.” Sadly, Archbishop Lefebvre died excommunicated. While those like you continue to maintain that the Archbishop and bishops were not validly excommunicated, Pope Benedict’s lifting of the excommunication shows otherwise.

The Tridentine Mass is NOT the “Mass of All Times,” as there was a time when it didn’t exist.

The very phrase is offensive to Eastern Christians, whose liturgies were fixed before th Latin rite.
