hi i’m only new at this my parish is holding a penance service next week and i was wondering what happens?
 
Prayers together, possibly with Liturgy of the Word, possibly a guided examination of conscience, some singing, followed by individual confession to a priest. Hopefully several priests will be assisting.

Exactly this way at our parish. We typically have 10 priests come to help hear confession. It usually takes almost 4 hours. Last year we were in a hurry to get there and didn’t have time to eat dinner… with stomach growling fiercely… I asked God to please let this hunger be part of my penance! 😃

I just came from our service.
Mine is a small parish so Father only had two other priests helping him.
It begins with an opening prayer followed by the readings.
As with Mass, one reading was from the OT followed by a Psalm, and a reading from the Epistles, plus a Gospel reading.
This was followed by a homily.
The Examination of Conscience was read aloud.
After that, each person goes to individual confession.
 
Our parish does this twice a year. Once during Lent, once during Advent.

They hand out an examination of conscience. We have the readings, a homily and then individual confessions.

We generally have 8 - 10 priests. Last year I used it as a time to bring my Mom back to the sacrament.

We, too, have it in Advent and Lent. Only one priest available – not that we need more: out of a parish of approx. 1500 people we get about 20 who go to confession that night.

I don’t really know the size of our parish.🤷
But when we have a Penance Service, there are long lines. Even with 8 - 10 priests.
 
if you attend such a service, and do have to leave for some reason before you have a chance to confess, try to go to individual confession at the next opportunity. for one thing you are all prepared, for another of course you have no assurance your sins have been forgiven until you do. The other benefit of such a service is that it models a good way for us to prepare for confession on our own.
