hi i’m only new at this my parish is holding a penance service next week and i was wondering what happens?
Exactly this way at our parish. We typically have 10 priests come to help hear confession. It usually takes almost 4 hours. Last year we were in a hurry to get there and didn’t have time to eat dinner… with stomach growling fiercely… I asked God to please let this hunger be part of my penance!Prayers together, possibly with Liturgy of the Word, possibly a guided examination of conscience, some singing, followed by individual confession to a priest. Hopefully several priests will be assisting.
We, too, have it in Advent and Lent. Only one priest available – not that we need more: out of a parish of approx. 1500 people we get about 20 who go to confession that night. Our parish does this twice a year. Once during Lent, once during Advent.
They hand out an examination of conscience. We have the readings, a homily and then individual confessions.
We generally have 8 - 10 priests. Last year I used it as a time to bring my Mom back to the sacrament.
