Is ok if the priest eliminate the 2 th reading on the children Mass in order to make it shorter? (sunday Mass)

Actually if using the Lectionary for Children at masses where the great majority of children are present or at a Children’s Liturgy of the Word, they are allowed to omit one of the readings, just not the Gospel.

I guess then the answer is that I was right when talking about using a standard lectionary, but I was unaware of the Children’s lecitonary. So really, the answer is no, the priest does not have the authority to omit a reading but there exists a legitimate lectionary that can be used which allows for shortening or omitting some readings.

All this means is that the bishops approved a lectionary for use in Children’s Mass which have a reading omitted but it was not the priest who removed the reading.

IMO, this lectionary is a terrible idea, but who am I. Apparently you can omit a reading if “children could perceive as anti-Semitic or racist.” Who makes that call? I will bet we are the only country with such a book but I don’t know.

Correct, but I believe that for a children’s mass or a Mass that occurs before a battle or some other such dramatic sequence there are provisions.

I can’t think of a good reason to hold a Children’s Mass on a Sunday, though, as children are not in school and must be attened to by a parent or other adult.

EDIT-actually I can…summer camp. I know that they did a shorter mass with Dioceses permission due to the fact that the priest had to drive 30 minutes each way to get to the isolated camp and had to be back in time to say the next mass at a country parish that had only 2 Sunday Masses 7am and 12pm

On Dec 8, the children’s lectionary doesn’t even have a 2nd reading. Before questioning the priest’s authority…make sure he’s even making a choice by his authority.

From The Directory for Masses with Children:

1. With regard to the number of readings on Sundays and holy days, the decrees of the conferences of bishops are to be observed. If three or even two readings appointed on Sundays or weekdays can be understood by children only with difficulty, it is permissible to read two or only one of them, but the reading of the gospel should never be omitted.
