I have a gap year between college and medical school, and I want to give as much of that time as possible to Christ. Unfortunately, I have to be available on weekends in the fall for med school interviews, so I can’t participate in anything that requires a year-long commitment.

I’ve been looking on the internet and cnvs.org and the Palotti Center, and haven’t found anything that really calls to me yet. So I’m asking you guys!

I’m looking for a foreign mission trip. At this point I’m open to anything that lets me stay for 3 to 6 months, but my dream would be to do campus ministry. Healthcare ministry would be pretty great, too, of course.

thanks everyone!

Saint Patrick’s Evangelisation School is a nine-month programme in London, England, beginning around the start of October, so if your med-school interviews are before then (I don’t knwo how these things work), that might suit you. It combines living in a small community with a structured prayer life, outreach on the streets, serving the homeless, academic lectures and a qualification in the Catechism. Students come from all around the world. I can say from personal experience that God can use it to change people’s lives.

Vincent, that School looks awesome! I’d love to talk with you about your experiences there sometime, if you’re willing.

FCEGM, thanks for the links. I had come across some of those websites as I googled around, but they didn’t seem to have specific lay programs… do you think I should contact them directly and arrange something?

You’re welcome. They are on something of a hiatus this academic year due to building work, but they are still recruiting for next year and running outreach.

The blog gives a good idea of what life in the School is like – look in the archive on the sidebar for previous years for a flavour.

PM me if you would like more info – I’m more than happy to share, or to put you in touch with the people who are running things this year.

I would definitely encourage you to contact them, especially the Missionaries of the Poor with whose work I’m more familiar. I think they would be happy to have someone assist them who has some medical training.

since you have already tried the sources I might recommend, find out if your diocese partners with a diocese in another country and sponsors regular mission trips there.
