Does it seem as though we are headed to where parshes will offer 3 masses.A traditional mass, A more traditionalized norvus ordo mass(where some prayers are said in latin) and life teen. I’m just wondering how this will affect our church in the long run basically offering a buffee style of worship. Even though I’m a new Catholic I’m in favor of making the current mass more traditional. And would consider going to a tradional latin mass if the archdiocese of seattle ever aproves of it. I won’t go to a schism just to see it but I can’t deny any gripes trational catholic have.

Your thoughts

Thus says Jesus: “May they all be one,
Father, that they may be one in us,
as you are in me and I am in you,
so that the world mat believe that it was you who sent me…
and that I have loved them as much as you loved me.”
John 17 v.21-23

Don’t forget all the Spanish Masses too. 👍

Make that FOUR Masses…

We already have this. There is the guitar Mass with drums and bass. There is the silent (early) Mass for the older people who can’t take the noise of the upbeat Mass, and then there is the middle of the road Mass with an organ or piano and perhaps a choir or just a cantor.

I think it’s great!

If it’s OK with the Church, it’s OK. The Church has OKed two different forms of the same rite, and within the OF, there is a lot of variation allowed.

I think this is a wonderful way to help people come back to Mass. The Lord Jesus “entertained” the people with stories and parables rather than just teaching the Law and the Prophets the way it had always been taught.

As for “being one” (John 17), I think it’s a stretch to say that this refers to doing everything alike in Mass. The only way we could do this exactly is to broadcast worldwide one Mass and everyone participates. There will always be little differences: music selections, the announcments after Mass (or before, in some parishes), the prayer intentions that the presider adds to the prayers, the architecture of the building, what the people are wearing (cultural), etc.

We do the first two already and there is no “Teen” Mass because there is no demand for it

Actually I think that by the next 40 years (which will be after my time unless I’m a serious Guinness contender for oldest living person) we will have:
  1. The E.F. (low and high) Mass.
  2. A reverent O.F. celebrated with the Latin and Greek parts as Vatican 2 had intended, with chant in ‘pride of place’, organ if available, and a rich heritage of music. I believe that at the end of the next 40 years there will be no more ‘guitar’ Masses --not because the guitar is a terrible instrument (it is not) but because the majority of the music used will not require accompaniment (chant), and that there will be a falling off of ‘guitar’ players and a resurgence of ‘organists’ coming to serve the Church.
Instruments go in cycles. The guitar has already ‘crested’, I think, (pace, “Guitar Hero”) and will steadily wane. Meanwhile, with the interest in liturgical reform, the organ will regain its popularity.

Further, there will be no more ‘oriented’ Masses. No more ‘teen’ or ‘childrens’ Masses. . .because there is no need to make a ‘special’ Mass for a particular group–the Mass is special AS IT IS, and the ‘groups’ need to adjust to the MASS, not the Mass to adjust to them. This again will foster unity.

There will be no “Spanish” Masses per se: They will be under #2 --reverent O.F. with the Latin and the Greek, etc., beautiful Spanish hymns and chant, etc. Ditto with other “ethnic” Masses.

And it will be a wonderful day when we are all ‘one’ again.

Quite honestly, I would be content if the Priests would simply say the black and do the red.

If only…

Or more…

I was visiting in Orange County recently and checking Mass times for the churches in the area. One parish had three Masses on Saturday evening: one in English, one in Spanish, and one in Vietnamese.

I hope there will be as many different Masses as needed to meet the spiritual needs of the people.

It could’ve been three in Latin, with a healthy blend of nationalities in each.

Amen to that. My own parish priest does this just fine, but when I visit other places, I am astounded at the “innovation” introduced at various places in the Mass. I kinda want to go up to these priests and respectfully ask “what part of ‘don’t add or detract from the Mass’ don’t you understand?”

I had an interesting chat with our LifeTeen music director today.

The funny thing is, he would rather attend a Latin High Mass, but he realizes the good that comes from our LifeTeen program, and others…in the way of reverent youth and vocations.

Yes we do seem to have a lot of different Masses these days, but the alternative is what…force feed everyone ONE Mass and watch them leave?

yea…the Lord “entertained” if you like to call it that
but he didn’t do it in the holy of holies which would be like the sanctuary in church…

As long as the Masses are reverent, orthodox and support Church teaching I really don’t care how many they have. But the sad truth is that quite often in their zeal to make the Mass accomodating to a particular group and to rope them in so to speak, they take liberties and commit abuses. Thats a fact and you know it.

The Traditional Mass was the only Mass in town for a long long time and you didn’t have people departing in droves as a result. You have had more do that since the advent of the Pauline than at any time in history.

And no, I’m not arguing that the Pauline is the only reason for the exodus, but it is definitely part of it.

This is no attack on you, but I have a friend that always says, “It’s not worth it to adjust to people’s needs in the Liturgy. If they’re going to leave us now, what good are they going to be in the persecution?” It’s an exaggerated point, but people need to be taught that the Mass is not about what they want or “need”, it’s about how we can worship God in a manner that becomes worship of the Most High.
